Abstract

A scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) that includes at least one adjustable scanning system adapted for a variable field of view; at least one light source having at least a first spectral emission band suitable to effect at least one of a fluorescence signal and a reflectance signal from a retinal cell; and at least one detector configured to detect at least two different spectral bands from the at least one of the fluorescence and reflectance signals.

Claims (37)

1. A scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO), comprising:

at least one adjustable scanning system adapted for a variable field of view;

at least one light source having a first spectral emission band suitable to effect at least one of a fluorescence signal and a reflectance signal from a retinal cell and a different, second spectral emission band suitable to effect at least one of a fluorescence signal and a reflectance signal from a retinal cell; and

at least one detector configured to detect at least two different spectral bands from the at least one of the fluorescence and reflectance signals.

2. The SLO of claim 1 , wherein the at least one detector includes at least two detectors suitable to detect at least one respective fluorescence signal and at least one respective reflectance signal.

3. The SLO of claim 1 , wherein the at least two different light sources includes at least two laser sources, further comprising at least two detectors suitable to detect at least one respective fluorescence signal and at least one respective reflectance signal.

4. The SLO of claim 1 , wherein the at least two different light sources include laser diodes, laser, or a combination thereof.

5. The SLO of claim 4 , further comprising a laser diode having an 830 nm output and a tunable Ar/Kr laser having an output between approximately 488 nm to approximately 568 nm.

6. The SLO of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adaptive optics system includes at least one of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, a MEMS deformable mirror, and a laser beacon.

7. The SLO of claim 1 , further characterized by a variable field of view between about 1 degree and about 3.5 degrees.

8. The SLO of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source consists of two light sources and the at least one detector consists of two detectors, which are adapted for simultaneous reflectance and fluorescence imaging.

9. The SLO of claim 1 , further comprising at least one computer system.

10. The SLO of claim 9 , wherein the at least one computer system includes at least one of an adaptive optics correction system and an image acquisition system.

11. A scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO), comprising:

at least one adjustable scanning system adapted for a variable field of view;

at least one light source having at least a first spectral emission band suitable to effect at least one of a fluorescence signal and a reflectance signal from a retinal cell and a different, second spectral emission band suitable to effect at least one of a fluorescence signal and a reflectance signal from a retinal cell;

at least one adaptive optics system configured to process light from the at least one of the fluorescence and reflectance signals; and

at least one detector configured to detect at least two different spectral bands from the at least one of the fluorescence and reflectance signals.

12. The SLO of claim 11 , wherein the at least one detector includes at least two detectors suitable to detect at least one respective fluorescence signal and at least one respective reflectance signal.

13. The SLO of claim 11 , wherein the at least two different light sources includes at least two laser sources, further comprising at least two detectors suitable to detect at least one respective fluorescence signal and at least one respective reflectance signal.

14. The SLO of claim 11 , wherein the at least two different light sources include laser diodes, laser, or a combination thereof.

15. The SLO of claim 14 , further comprising a laser diode having an 830 nm output and a tunable Ar/Kr laser having an output between approximately 488 nm to approximately 568 nm.

16. The SLO of claim 11 , wherein the at least one adaptive optics system includes at least one of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, a MEMS deformable mirror, and a laser beacon.

17. The SLO of claim 11 , further characterized by a variable field of view between about 1 degree and about 3.5 degrees.

18. The SLO of claim 11 , wherein the at least one light source consists of two light sources and the at least one detector consists of two detectors, which are adapted for simultaneous reflectance and fluorescence imaging.

19. The SLO of claim 11 , further comprising at least one computer system.

20. The SLO of claim 19 , wherein the at least one computer system includes at least one of an adaptive optics correction system and an image acquisition system.

21. An adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO), comprising:

at least one light source adapted for at least one of fluorescence and reflectance excitation of a retinal object;

at least one element adapted for wavefront correction;

at least one vertical scanner;

at least one horizontal scanner adapted to generate a synchronization signal for use by the at least one vertical scanner;

at least one detector; and

scanner control electronics adapted to adjust at least one of the at least one horizontal scanner and the at least one vertical scanner.

22. The AOSLO according to claim 21 , wherein the at least one light source includes a laser diode.

23. The AOSLO according to claim 21 , further comprising at least one variable frequency acousto-optic modulator adapted for at least one of shutter control and light modulation.

24. The AOSLO according to claim 21 , further comprising an optical fiber adapted to receive light from the at least one variable frequency acousto-optic modulator.
