Abstract

A method and apparatus for transmitting emergency messages is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device, of a communication system, having a controller element to send a selection of types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted to one or more associates of a subscriber corresponding to the communication device; and receive an emergency alert message of a public emergency alert system for a zone of coverage, wherein the subscriber is in the zone of coverage and wherein the emergency alert message is transmitted to one or more associate communication devices of each of the one or more associates according to the selection of types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (61)

1. A method comprising:

identifying one or more individuals that are in the zone of coverage of an emergency alert message;

identifying one or more associate internet protocol television (IPTV) devices for each of one or more associates of the one or more individuals;

providing types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted to the one or more associate IPTV devices;

receiving a selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted;

receiving associate presence information corresponding to the one or more associates; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices based on the associate presence information when the emergency alert message corresponds to the selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted, wherein:

the selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted is a pre-selection prior to the detecting of the emergency alert message; and

the pre-selection is made by at least one among the one or more individuals or the one or more associates.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the associate presence information is based at least in part on activity of one or more associate communication devices that is indicative of a likelihood of success in communicating with the one or more associates.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more individual IPTV devices for each of the one or more individuals, wherein the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted are provided to the one or more individual IPTV devices in proximity to a time that the emergency alert message is transmitted to the one or more individual IPTV devices.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more individual IPTV devices for each of the one or more individuals;

receiving individual presence information corresponding to the one or more individuals; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual IPTV devices based at least in part on the individual presence information corresponding to the one or more individuals.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting an alert notice to the at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices prior to transmitting the emergency alert message to the at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices, wherein the one or more associates can decline receipt of the emergency alert message based upon the alert notice.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals; and transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual communication devices.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

the one or more individual communication devices comprise at least one IPTV device.

8. A system comprising circuitry for:

identifying one or more individuals that are in the zone of coverage of an emergency alert message;

identifying one or more associate internet protocol television (IPTV) devices for each of one or more associates of the one or more individuals;

providing types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted to the one or more associate IPTV devices;

receiving a selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted;

receiving associate presence information corresponding to the one or more associates; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices based on the associate presence information when the emergency alert message corresponds to the selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted, wherein:

the selection of the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted is a pre-selection prior to the detecting of the emergency alert message; and

the pre-selection is made by at least one among the one or more individuals or the one or more associates.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the associate presence information is based at least in part on activity of one or more associate communication devices that is indicative of a likelihood of success in communicating with the one or more associates.

10. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for:

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals, wherein the types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted are provided to the one or more individual communication devices in proximity to a time that the emergency alert message is transmitted to the one or more subscriber communication devices.

11. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual communication devices, wherein the one or more individual communication devices comprise at least one wireless communication device.

12. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual communication devices, wherein the one or more individual communication devices comprise at least one IPTV device.

13. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for:

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals;

receiving individual presence information corresponding to the one or more individual communication devices; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual communication devices based at least in part on the individual presence information.

14. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for:

transmitting an alert notice to the at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices prior to transmitting the emergency alert message to the at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices, wherein the one or more associates can decline receipt of the emergency alert message based upon the alert notice.

15. The system of claim 8 , comprising circuitry further for:

identifying one or more individual communication devices for each of the one or more individuals; and

transmitting the emergency alert message to the one or more individual communication devices, wherein the one or more individual communication devices comprise at least of a computer, a fixed communication device, a short-range portable communication device, or a cellular communication device.

16. A network element comprising circuitry for:

identifying one or more associate internet protocol television (IPTV) devices for each of one or more associates corresponding to an individual in a zone of coverage of an emergency alert;

transmitting emergency information regarding the emergency alert to one or more individual communication devices of the individual; and

transmitting the emergency information to at least one of the one or more associate IPTV devices when the emergency alert message corresponds to:

a selection of types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted to the one or more associate IPTV devices; and

associate presence information of the one or more associates, wherein:

the selection is made by at least one of the individual or the one or more associates; and

the selection of types of emergency alert messages to be transmitted to the one or more associate IPTV devices is a pre-selection prior to a detection of the emergency alert message.

17. The network element of claim 16 , wherein the presence information is based at least in part on one or more associate communication devices that is indicative of a likelihood of success in communicating with the one or more associates.

18. The network element of claim 16 , wherein the presence information is based at least in part on the one or more associate IPTV devices that is indicative of a likelihood of success in communicating with the one or more associates.

19. The network element of claim 16 , wherein the emergency information is transmitted to the one or more individual communication devices based at least in part on presence information corresponding to the one or more individual communication devices.

20. The network element of claim 16 , wherein the one or more individual communication devices comprise at least one IPTV device.
