Abstract

A flexible strip brush element is constructed from multiple monofilaments arranged in a parallel fashion and attached at one end to a flexible base. The monofilaments are attached to the base by intermingling material from the base with material from the monofilaments. The free ends of the monofilaments collectively form a bristle end zone. A plurality of flexible strip brush elements may be bonded side-by-side so the free ends of the monofilaments form a common bristle end zone. The bonded flexible strip brush elements may take the form of a linear section or may be fashioned into an endless loop or jointless spiral. The base may comprise a polymer and a reinforcing material.

Claims (31)

1 . A flexible strip brush element, comprising:

a base comprising a polymer and a reinforcing material and having a bristle attachment region; and

a plurality of monofilaments secured to the bristle attachment region.

2 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein the base is wound into a plurality of adjacent bonded coils.

3 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of adjacent bonded coils includes a side approximately perpendicular to the width of the base and bonded to a side of another of the plurality of adjacent bonded coils.

4 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of monofilaments includes a proximal end secured to the bristle attachment region and a distal end included in a bristle end zone.

5 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing material is stainless steel.

6 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 5 , wherein the stainless steel is in the form of a yarn.

7 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing material is secured to an outer surface of the polymer.

8 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing material is positioned at least partially within the polymer.

9 . The flexible strip brush element of claim 1 , wherein the reinforcing material of the base has a greater tensile strength than the polymer of the base.

10 . A method for manufacturing a flexible strip brush element, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of thermoplastic monofilaments having a first end and a second end;

providing a base having a top and a bottom, the base comprising a polymer and a reinforcing material;

applying heat to the first end of the plurality of monofilaments;

contacting the first end of the plurality of monofilaments with the top of the base; and

cooling the monofilaments and the base so that the first ends of the monofilaments are fused to the top of the base.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising extruding a polymeric resin to provide an extruded polymer, and securing a reinforcing material to the extruded polymer to form the base.

12 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising extruding a polymeric resin with a reinforcing material to provide the base.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the reinforcing material is stainless steel.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the stainless steel is in the form of a yarn.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the reinforcing material of the base has a greater tensile strength than the polymer of the base.

16 . A system for planting food plots comprising:

a plot planting apparatus comprising a flexible brush element comprising a base having a polymer and a reinforcing material, and having a bristle attachment region, and a plurality of monofilaments secured to the bristle attachment region.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the reinforcing material of the base has a greater tensile strength than the polymer of the base.

18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the reinforcing material is stainless steel.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the stainless steel is in the form of a yarn.

20 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the reinforcing material is secured to an outer surface of the polymer.

21 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the reinforcing material is positioned at least partially within the polymer.

22 . A method of retrofitting a plot planting system, the plot planting system comprising a flexible belt brush, the method comprising:

replacing the flexible belt brush with a replacement flexible belt brush comprising a base comprising a polymer and a reinforcing material and having a bristle attachment region, and a plurality of monofilaments secured to the bristle attachment region.
