Abstract

An apparatus and method for photodynamic therapy or photodynamic diagnosis using an illuminator comprising a plurality of light sources generally conforming to a contoured surface and irradiating the contoured surface with substantially uniform intensity visible light. The light sources may comprise generally U-shaped fluorescent tubes that are driven by electronic ballasts. The spacing of the U-shaped tubes is varied to increase the output at the edges of the illuminator to make the output more uniform. Also, different portions of the tubes are cooled at different amounts, to improve uniformity. A light sensor monitors output from the U-shaped tubes to provide a signal for adjusting the output from the tubes.

Claims (55)

1. A method of photodynamically treating a patient, comprising:

administering 5-aminolevulinic acid to at least a portion of a patient; and

irradiating the patient with substantially uniform intensity visible light from a plurality of light sources at a power of 9.3 to 10.7 mW/cm 2 .

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the irradiating is stopped when a dose of 10 J/cm 2 of the light is delivered to the patient.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the patient is irradiated with light substantially entirely within the blue region.

4. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat actinic keratosis.

5. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat acne.

6. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat photo damaged skin.

7. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat cancer.

8. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat a pre-cancerous condition.

9. A method according to claim 1 , comprising the step of admixing the 5-aminolevulinic acid with a vehicle just prior to its use.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises topically applying the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises injecting the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

12. A method of photodynamically treating a patient, comprising:

administering 5-aminolevulinic acid to at least a portion of a patient; and

irradiating the patient with substantially uniform intensity visible light from a plurality of light sources; and

stopping said irradiating when a dose of 10 J/cm 2 has been delivered to the patient.

13. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the irradiating uses fluorescent tubes.

14. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the patient is irradiated with light substantially entirely within the blue region.

15. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat actinic keratosis.

16. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat acne.

17. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat photo damaged skin.

18. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat cancer.

19. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat a pre-cancerous condition.

20. A method according to claim 12 , comprising the step of admixing the 5-aminolevulinic acid with a vehicle just prior to its use.

21. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises topically applying the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

22. A method according to claim 12 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises injecting the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

23. A method of photodynamically treating a patient, comprising:

administering 5-aminolevulinic acid to at least a portion of a patient; and

irradiating the patient with substantially uniform intensity visible light from a plurality of light sources; and

stopping said irradiating when light has been delivered to the patient for 1000 seconds.

24. A method according to claim 23 , wherein the irradiating uses fluorescent tubes.

25. A method according to claim 23 , wherein the patient is irradiated with light substantially entirely within the blue region.

26. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat actinic keratosis.

27. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat acne.

28. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat photo damaged skin.

29. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat cancer.

30. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat a pre-cancerous condition.

31. A method according to claim 23 , comprising the step of admixing the 5-aminolevulinic acid with a vehicle just prior to its use.

32. A method according to claim 23 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises topically applying the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

33. A method according to claim 23 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises injecting the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

34. A method of photodynamically treating a patient, comprising:

administering 5-aminolevulinic acid to at least a portion of a patient;

irradiating the patient with substantially uniform blue light from a plurality of light sources; and

stopping said irradiating when a dose of 10 J/cm 2 has been delivered to the patient.

35. A method according to claim 34 , wherein the irradiating uses fluorescent tubes.

36. A method according to claim 34 , wherein the patient is irradiated with light substantially entirely within the blue region.

37. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat actinic keratosis.

38. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat acne.

39. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat photo damaged skin.

40. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat cancer.

41. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of topically applying 5-aminolevulinic acid to the portion and irradiating the portion to treat a pre-cancerous condition.

42. A method according to claim 34 , comprising the step of admixing the 5-aminolevulinic acid with a vehicle just prior to its use.

43. A method according to claim 34 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises topically applying the 5-aminolevulinic acid.

44. A method according to claim 34 , wherein the administering 5-aminolevulinic acid comprises injecting the 5-aminolevulinic acid.
