Abstract

A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system based upon peer-to-peer communications. A wireless terminal for peer-to-peer communications acts either as a WLAN master or as a WLAN slave. When the wireless terminal acts a master, the wireless terminal undertakes mastering duties that include transmitting a beacon interval in the frame cycle. When the wireless terminal is not tethered to a power source, mastering duties alternate according to a round-robin WLAN mastering cycle, wherein the wireless terminal acts the WLAN master during at least one frame cycle and acts the WLAN slave during other frame cycles to conserve an untethered power source of the wireless terminal.

Claims (48)

1. A method for power management in peer-to-peer communications in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) having a plurality of wireless terminals that each include a transmitter and a receiver, the method comprising:

transmitting, by one of the plurality of wireless terminals, a beacon interval in a frame cycle; and

listening, by remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals, for the beacon frame, wherein the plurality of wireless terminals are configured to conserve battery life by selectively powering down either of their respective transmitters and receivers during select periods of time in the frame cycle, the select periods of time including:

powering down the respective transmitter during the beacon interval; and

powering down the respective receiver during a polled data period following a broadcast data period; and

when the one of the plurality of wireless terminals is untethered to a power source, alternating mastering duties among the plurality of wireless terminals according to a round-robin mastering cycle.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the one of the plurality of wireless terminals acts as a WLAN master; and

the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals act as WLAN slaves with respect to the one of the plurality of wireless terminals.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein:

the round-robin mastering cycle includes a round-robin WLAN mastering cycle including a plurality of frame cycles, wherein another one of the plurality of wireless terminals acts as the WLAN master during each frame cycle of the plurality of wireless terminals and the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals acting as the WLAN slaves during the each frame cycle of the plurality of wireless terminals.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein none of plurality of wireless terminals acts as the WLAN master for consecutive frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein none of plurality of wireless terminals acts as the WLAN master for more than one frame cycle of the plurality of frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein one of the plurality of wireless terminals acts as the WLAN master for more than one consecutive frame cycle of the plurality of frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

during the beacon interval, a wireless terminal of the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals determining that it has been assigned a polled data period following the broadcast period;

the wireless terminal of the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals powering down its transmitter during the beacon interval; and

the wireless terminal of the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals powering up its transmitter during the polled data period following the broadcast data period.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

during a plurality of polled data periods, the remaining ones of the plurality of wireless terminals powering down at least one of their transmitter and their receiver during unassigned polled data periods.

9. A wireless terminal for peer-to-peer communications in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), the wireless terminal comprising:

a processor;

a radio frequency unit coupled to processing circuitry that supports wireless data transmission, the radio frequency unit including a transmitter and a receiver;

memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory stores operational instructions that cause the processor to:

during a frame cycle of a plurality of frame cycles, configure the wireless terminal to act either as a WLAN master or as a WLAN slave, wherein as the WLAN master the wireless terminal undertakes mastering duties; and

when the wireless terminal is not tethered to a power source, alternate the mastering duties according to a round-robin WLAN mastering cycle, wherein the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN master during at least one frame cycle and acts as the WLAN slave during other frame cycles to conserve an untethered power source of the wireless terminal by selectively powering down either of the transmitter and the receiver during select periods of time in the frame cycle, the select periods of time including:

powering down the transmitter during a beacon interval; and

powering down the receiver during a polled data period following a broadcast data period.

10. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein the wireless terminal does not act as the WLAN master for consecutive frame cycles of the plurality of frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

11. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein the wireless terminal does not act as the WLAN master for more than one frame cycle of the plurality of frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

12. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN master for more than one consecutive frame cycle of a plurality of frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.

13. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein, when the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN slave, the memory further stores operational instructions that cause the processor to:

during the beacon interval and the broadcast data period, power down the transmitter of the radio frequency unit.

14. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein, when the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN slave, the memory further stores operational instructions that cause the processor to:

power up the receiver after a contention period of the cycle of plurality of cycles in anticipation of a next beacon interval.

15. The wireless terminal of claim 9 , wherein, when the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN master, the memory further stores operational instructions that cause the processor to:

power down the transmitter of the radio frequency unit during a contention period of the frame cycle.

16. A method in a wireless terminal for peer-to-peer communications in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), the method comprising:

during a frame cycle of a plurality of frame cycles, acting either as a WLAN master or as a WLAN slave, wherein as the WLAN master the wireless terminal undertakes mastering duties that include transmitting a beacon interval in the frame cycle; and

when the wireless terminal is not tethered to a power source, alternating the mastering duties according to a round-robin WLAN mastering cycle, wherein the wireless terminal acts as the WLAN master during at least one frame cycle and acts as the WLAN slave during other frame cycles to conserve an untethered power source of the wireless terminal, wherein while the wireless terminal is acting the WLAN slave, selectively powering down either of a transmitter and a receiver of the wireless terminal during select periods of time in the frame cycle, the select periods of time including:

powering down the respective transmitter during the beacon interval; and

powering down the respective receiver during a polled data period following a broadcast data period.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the wireless terminals does not act as the WLAN master for consecutive frame cycles of the round-robin WLAN mastering cycle.
