Abstract

Protective gear such as a helmet includes multiple shell layers connected through energy and impact transformer layers. The energy and impact transformer layers may include conical structures used to dissipate mechanical energy applied to an outer shell layer while allowing an outer shell layer the ability to rotate with respect to a middle or inner shell layer. The conical structures may be three dimensional pyramids, three dimensional parabolic structures, and may be outwardly or inwardly oriented.

Claims (17)

1. Protective gear, comprising:

a helmet, the helmet comprising:

an outer shell layer;

a middle shell layer;

an inner shell layer;

an outer energy and impact transformer layer connecting the outer shell layer to the middle shell layer, wherein the outer energy and impact transformer layer comprises a first plurality of thin elastomeric trusses configured to absorb energy from mechanical forces imparted onto the outer shell layer, wherein the outer energy and impact transformer layer allows the outer shell layer to rotate relative to the middle shell layer, wherein the first plurality of thin elastomeric trusses are arranged such that each thin elastomeric truss of the first plurality of thin elastomeric trusses diagonally connects the outer shell layer to the middle shell layer in a first direction and wherein each thin elastomeric truss of the first plurality of thin elastomeric trusses is parallel to adjacent thin elastomeric trusses of the first plurality of thin elastomeric trusses, wherein the outer energy and impact transformer layer is filled with an absorptive fluid or gel; and

an inner energy and impact transformer layer connecting the middle shell layer to the inner shell layer, wherein the inner energy and impact transformer layer comprises a second plurality of thin elastomeric trusses configured to absorb energy from mechanical forces imparted onto the middle shell layer, wherein the inner energy and impact transformer layer allows the middle shell layer to rotate relative to the inner shell layer, wherein the second plurality of thin elastomeric trusses are arranged such that each thin elastomeric truss of the second plurality of thin elastomeric trusses diagonally connects the middle shell layer to the inner shell layer in a second direction and wherein each thin elastomeric truss of the second plurality of thin elastomeric trusses is parallel to adjacent thin elastomeric trusses of the second plurality of thin elastomeric trusses, wherein the second direction is opposite to the first direction, wherein the inner energy and impact transformer layer is filled with an absorptive fluid or gel;

wherein the outer, middle, and inner shell layers are configured to protect against penetrating forces and are comprised of reinforcing aramids and one or more of the following materials: plastics, resins, metal, and composites;

wherein the energy and impact transformer layers are configured to protect against compression forces, shear forces, impact forces, and rotational forces, wherein the energy and impact transformer layers also include passive, semi-active, and active dampers;

wherein the outer shell has more weight, strength, and structural integrity than the middle shell and inner shell layers;

wherein the first and second pluralities of thin elastomeric trusses are comprised of an elastomeric truss material that absorbs and dissipates mechanical energy as thermal energy, wherein the elastomeric truss material is different in composition from a material of the outer, middle, and inner shell layers.

2. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the absorptive fluid or gel in either of the energy and impact transformer layers comprises a smart fluid that undergoes changes in viscosity when a magnetic field is applied.

3. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the outer energy and impact transformer layer comprises a magneto-rheological element.

4. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein mechanical forces include impact forces.

5. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein mechanical forces include rotational and shear forces.

6. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein a lining layer is connected to the inner shell layer, wherein the lining layer is configured to conform to a human head.

7. The helmet of claim 6 , wherein the lining layer comprises foam.
