Abstract

A method, computer program product, and computer system for using a device description repository comprises accessing from a device description repository environment on a computing device, a computing device profile hierarchy that represents one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices. A run-time profile hierarchy that represents one or more run-time capabilities of one or more applications is accessed from the device description repository environment. At least a portion of the one or more run-time capabilities in the run-time profile hierarchy is detected separately from the computing device profile hierarchy.

Claims (30)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

accessing from a device description repository environment on a computing device, a computing device profile hierarchy that represents one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices;

accessing from the device description repository environment, a run-time profile hierarchy that represents one or more run-time capabilities of one or more applications; and

detecting at least a portion of the one or more run-time capabilities in the run-time profile hierarchy separately from the computing device profile hierarchy.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein detecting at least the portion of the one or more run-time capabilities separately from the computing device profile hierarchy includes using at least one of an on-request manufactured user agent string and a repository manufactured user agent string.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 wherein using the on-request manufactured user agent string includes combining at least a portion of a plurality of headers of a data request for the device description repository environment on the computing device.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 further comprising using the on-request manufactured user agent string to create a device description repository ID for at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications in the run-time profile hierarchy and at least one of the one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices in the computing device profile hierarchy.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 wherein the device description repository ID includes a wireless universal resource file ID.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities and the one or more computing device capabilities includes a virtual capability.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising setting a control capability value of at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications using a patch file to override at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications.

8 . A computer program product residing on a computer readable storage medium having a plurality of instructions stored thereon which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

accessing from a device description repository environment on a computing device, a computing device profile hierarchy that represents one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices;

accessing from the device description repository environment, a run-time profile hierarchy that represents one or more run-time capabilities of one or more applications; and

detecting at least a portion of the one or more run-time capabilities in the run-time profile hierarchy separately from the computing device profile hierarchy.

9 . The computer program product of claim 8 wherein detecting at least the portion of the one or more run-time capabilities separately from the computing device profile hierarchy includes using at least one of an on-request manufactured user agent string and a repository manufactured user agent string.

10 . The computer program product of claim 9 wherein using the on-request manufactured user agent string includes combining at least a portion of a plurality of headers of a data request for the device description repository environment on the computing device.

11 . The computer program product of claim 9 further comprising using the on-request manufactured user agent string to create a device description repository ID for at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications in the run-time profile hierarchy and at least one of the one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices in the computing device profile hierarchy.

12 . The computer program product of claim 11 wherein the device description repository ID includes a wireless universal resource file ID.

13 . The computer program product of claim 8 wherein at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities and the one or more computing device capabilities includes a virtual capability.

14 . The computer program product of claim 8 further comprising setting a control capability value of at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications using a patch file to override at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications.

15 . A computing system including a processor and memory configured to perform operations comprising:

accessing from a device description repository environment on a computing device, a computing device profile hierarchy that represents one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices;

accessing from the device description repository environment, a run-time profile hierarchy that represents one or more run-time capabilities of one or more applications; and

detecting at least a portion of the one or more run-time capabilities in the run-time profile hierarchy separately from the computing device profile hierarchy.

16 . The computing system of claim 15 wherein detecting at least the portion of the one or more run-time capabilities separately from the computing device profile hierarchy includes using at least one of an on-request manufactured user agent string and a repository manufactured user agent string.

17 . The computing system of claim 16 wherein using the on-request manufactured user agent string includes combining at least a portion of a plurality of headers of a data request for the device description repository environment on the computing device.

18 . The computing system of claim 16 further comprising using the on-request manufactured user agent string to create a device description repository ID for at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications in the run-time profile hierarchy and at least one of the one or more computing device capabilities of one or more computing devices in the computing device profile hierarchy.

19 . The computing system of claim 18 wherein the device description repository ID includes a wireless universal resource file ID.

20 . The computing system of claim 15 wherein at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities and the one or more computing device capabilities includes a virtual capability.

21 . The computing system of claim 15 further comprising setting a control capability value of at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications using a patch file to override at least one of the one or more run-time capabilities of the one or more applications.
