Abstract

A syringe assembly including: (1) a syringe barrel defining a chamber; (2) a plunger mounted in the chamber and moveable with respect to the barrel; and (3) a cap assembly containing a cap and an absorbent material is removably attached to the plunger.

Claims (37)

1. A method of cleaning and covering an access site, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a syringe including an access point at a proximal end thereof;

removing a sealing cover on a container having a cap to provide access to an absorbent material holding an antiseptic fluid in the cap prior to receiving an access site, wherein the cap is provided in the container and the container is attached to the syringe distal of the access point of the syringe;

attaching the cap to the access site with the cap positioned in the container;

withdrawing the container from the cap; and

allowing the cap to remain on and cover the access site.

2. The method claim 1 , further comprising the step of contacting the absorbent material with a front surface of the access site.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of removing the cap from the syringe after engaging the cap with the access site.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of retaining antiseptic fluid within the cap by sealing the cap with a thread cover engaging the access site.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of attaching the cap to the access site with the cap positioned in the container includes the step of preventing relative rotational movement between the syringe and the cap to ensure common rotational movement about a common axis.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of flushing an access site with a solution comprises flushing an access site with a solution delivered by a syringe.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution comprises an anti-microbial agent selected from the group consisting of taurolidine and triclosan.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution comprises an anticoagulant agent selected from the group consisting of riboflavin, sodium citrate, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, and citric acid.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution comprises a disinfectant agent having a lower-alcohol content selected from the group consisting of ethanol, propanol, and butanol.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the solution comprises an agent selected from the group consisting of an antiseptic, an anticoagulant, and an antimicrobial.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of withdrawing the container from the cap is performed after the cap is attached to the access site.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of flushing the access site with a solution.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of flushing the access site with a solution prior to removing the sealing cover.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cap comprises a threaded cap.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the step of attaching the cap to the access site with the cap positioned in the container comprises threading the cap onto the access site with the cap positioned in the container.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of threading the cap onto the access site with the cap positioned in the container includes the step of preventing relative rotational movement between the syringe and the cap to ensure common rotational movement about a common axis.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the step of withdrawing the container from the cap is performed after the cap is threaded onto the access site.

18. A method of cleaning and covering an access site, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a syringe including an access point at a proximal end thereof;

removing a sealing cover on a container having a cap with a thread cover to provide access to an absorbent material holding an antiseptic fluid in the cap prior to receiving the access site, wherein the cap is provided in the container and the container is attached to the syringe distal the proximal end;

attaching the cap to the access site with the cap positioned in the container;

withdrawing the container from the cap;

allowing the thread cover to contact the access site, the thread cover retaining antiseptic fluid within the cap.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising the step of contacting the absorbent material with a front surface of the access site.

20. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of removing the cap from the syringe after attaching the cap with the access site.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein the step of withdrawing the container from the cap is performed after the cap is attached to the access site.

22. The method of claim 18 , further comprising the step of flushing the access site with a solution delivered by the syringe.

23. The method of claim 18 , further comprising the step of flushing the access site with a solution delivered by the syringe prior to removing the sealing cover.

24. The method of claim 18 , wherein the cap comprises a threaded cap.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the step of attaching the cap to the access site with the cap positioned in the container comprises threading the cap onto the access site with the cap positioned in the container.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of threading the cap onto the access site with the cap positioned in the container includes the step of preventing relative rotational movement between the syringe and the cap to ensure common rotational movement about a common axis.

27. The method of claim 25 , wherein the step of withdrawing the container from the cap is performed after the cap is threaded onto the access site.
