Abstract

A method of treating hypercholesterolemia in mammals, by administering an effective amount of a microbial fermentation product, and regulating genes involved in lipoprotein metabolism. A method of regulating cholesterol levels in a patient by administering an effective amount of a composition chosen from the group consisting of PAZ, specific components isolated from PAZ, chemically synthesized analogs of the components of PAZ, and regulating genes involved in lipoprotein metabolism. A method of treating high cholesterol levels in an individual by administering an effective amount of a microbial fermentation product, up-regulating the expression of at least one of the genes that encode ABCA1, ApoA1, and SRB1, and down-regulating the gene that encodes CETP. A method of preventing the onset of high cholesterol levels and/or a deleterious lipoprotein profile in an individual.

Claims (3)

1. A method of treating high cholesterol levels in an individual, including the steps of: administering an effective amount of a fraction of a PAZ culture filtrate chosen from the group consisting of PF3 and PF4, wherein if PF3 is administered, further including the step of up-regulating the expression of the gene that encodes ApoA1 and wherein if PF4 is administered, further including the steps of up-regulating the gene that encodes ABCA1 and SR-B1 and down-regulating the expression of the gene that encodes CETP.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the microbial fermentation product is a liquid oral supplement.

3. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of performing an assay to confirm that the up-regulating and down-regulating steps have been performed.
