Abstract

In exemplary embodiments, a regenerative suspension system replaces or complements a standard shock absorber on a vehicle. A pump attaches via a hose to a central accumulator cylinder that is mounted on a vehicle. Pressurized fluid, air, or other material charges the accumulator. The Pressurized fluid, air, or other material is controllably released via a valve in order to perform work.

Claims (42)

1. A system comprising:

a battery;

a plurality of regenerative suspension systems, wherein each regenerative suspension system is manufactured as an accessory for said vehicle and comprises a hydraulic fluid piston configured for the pressurization of hydraulic fluid upon the compression of said hydraulic fluid piston;

a hydraulic fluid storage unit configured to receive hydraulic fluid pressurized by each of the plurality of regenerative suspension systems;

a hydraulic motor; and

a generator,

wherein the hydraulic motor and the generator are co-housed,

wherein the pressurized hydraulic fluid rotates the hydraulic motor,

wherein the hydraulic motor is configured to rotate the shaft of the generator, and

wherein the generator is configured to charge the battery.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a fluid reservoir coupled to the hydraulic motor and situated proximate to the hydraulic fluid piston.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a bootstrap reservoir capable of receiving the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid storage unit and delivering the hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a hydraulic intensifier capable of receiving the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid storage unit and delivering the hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises magnetorheological fluid (“MR fluid”).

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the MR fluid is capable of inducing an electrical current in an electrical conductor as the MR fluid travels over the electrical conductor.

7. A method comprising:

delivering a hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic fluid storage unit at a first pressure;

delivering the hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic motor at a second pressure, the hydraulic fluid imparting a rotation to the hydraulic motor;

generating energy in response to the rotation of the hydraulic motor; and charging an energy storage element with the electrical energy,

further comprising delivering the hydraulic fluid to a bootstrap reservoir at the second pressure and delivering the hydraulic fluid, from the bootstrap reservoir, to the hydraulic motor at a third pressure.

8. A method comprising:

delivering a hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic fluid storage unit at a first pressure;

delivering the hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic motor at a second pressure, the hydraulic fluid imparting a rotation to the hydraulic motor;

generating electrical energy in response to the rotation of the hydraulic motor; and charging an energy storage element with the electrical energy,

further comprising delivering the hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic intensifier at the second pressure and delivering the hydraulic fluid, from the bootstrap reservoir, to the hydraulic motor at a third pressure.

9. A method comprising:

delivering a hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic fluid storage unit at a first pressure;

delivering the hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic motor at a second pressure, the hydraulic fluid imparting a rotation to the hydraulic motor;

generating electrical energy in response to the rotation of the hydraulic motor; and charging an energy storage element with the electrical energy,

wherein the fluid comprises magnetorheological fluid (“MR fluid”).

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising inducing an electrical current in an electrical conductor as the MR fluid travels over the electrical conductor.

11. A system comprising:

a hydraulic fluid pump capable of delivering a hydraulic fluid to a hydraulic fluid storage unit at a first pressure;

a hydraulic motor capable of receiving the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid storage unit at a second pressure;

a generator coupled to the hydraulic motor and capable of receiving mechanical energy from the hydraulic motor in response to the hydraulic motor receiving the hydraulic fluid; and

an energy storage element coupled to the generator and capable of being charged by the generator.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the hydraulic fluid is capable of rotating the hydraulic motor, and wherein the hydraulic motor is capable of rotating a shaft of the generator.

13. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a fluid reservoir coupled to the hydraulic motor and situated proximate to the hydraulic fluid pump.

14. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a bootstrap reservoir capable of receiving the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid storage unit and delivering the hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor at a third pressure.

15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a hydraulic intensifier capable of receiving the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic fluid storage unit and delivering the hydraulic fluid to the hydraulic motor at a third pressure.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid comprises magnetorheological fluid (“MR fluid”).

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the MR fluid is capable of inducing an electrical current in an electrical conductor as the MR fluid travels over the electrical conductor.
