Abstract

A bezel-less display is disclosed that includes an electronic display device and a cover. The electronic display device has an image-displaying portion and another portion adjacent the image-displaying portion along at least one side. The cover is positioned adjacent the electronic display device and includes a first portion positioned adjacent the image-displaying portion of the display device and a second portion positioned adjacent the other portion of the display device. The optical properties of the first portion are also selected to transmit images displayed on the image-displaying portion and the optical properties of the second portion are selected to mask the other portion of the display device.

Claims (25)

1. An electronic display without a bezel, comprising:

an electronic display device including an image-displaying portion and another portion adjacent the image-displaying portion;

a cover including at least a first portion that is light transmitting and a second portion extending adjacent the first portion;

an enclosure including a rear portion and at least one side portion extending from the rear portion and defining an open end spaced from the rear portion, the electronic display device being mounted in the enclosure and the cover closing the open end of the enclosure without a bezel;

wherein the first portion of the cover overlays the image-displaying portion of the display device and the second portion of the cover overlays the other portion of the display device; and

wherein the electronic display comprises material overlaying the other portion of the display device which has optical properties different from the first portion such that the second portion presents the appearance of a flush border.

2. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the cover comprises separate pieces.

3. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the second portion comprises the material overlaying the other portion of the display device.

4. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the material overlaying the other portion of the display device has optical properties such that the second portion presents the appearance of a flush border when the display device is displaying an image.

5. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the material comprises opaque material.

6. The electronic display of claim 5 , wherein the opaque material comprises an opaque layer.

7. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the cover includes a single sheet of plastic with the first and second portions forming different regions of the sheet.

8. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises a tint.

9. The electronic display of claim 8 , wherein the first portion comprises a neutral tint so as to reduce alternation of the color values of images transmitted through the first portion.

10. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the cover has a flat outer shape.

11. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the side portion of the enclosure extends from the rear portion to a height of at least the thickness of the electronic display device and the cover.

12. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the display device and cover are mounted in the enclosure such that the cover lies on top of an edge of the side portion and flush with a periphery thereof.

13. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the cover is mounted in an assembly including the electronic display device, the enclosure receiving the assembly with the cover closing the open end of the enclosure without a bezel.

14. The electronic display of claim 1 , comprising another display that presents at least one image in an area located within the second portion of the cover independently of whether the electronic display device displays an image.

15. The electronic display of claim 14 , wherein the other display device presents a fixed image.

16. The electronic display of claim 14 , wherein the other display device presents at least one logo.

17. The electronic display of claim 14 , wherein the other display device comprises a light source and structure defining a fixed image.

18. The electronic display of claim 17 , wherein the light source of the other display device comprises a liquid crystal device.

19. The electronic display of claim 17 , wherein the light source of the other display device comprises a light emitting diode.

20. The electronic display of claim 1 , wherein the electronic display device comprises a liquid crystal device.
