Abstract

A method and apparatus that will alter the fibrous strands in the fatty layers of the skin to reduce the appearance of cellulite and adipose tissue. Electromagnetic energy is used to selectively shrink or alternatively photoacoustically ablate the collagen in the constricting bands of connective tissue that causes the dimpled appearance of cellulite and adipose tissue while avoiding damage to the surrounding fatty cells.

Claims (27)

1. A method for the destruction of connective structure in cellulite and adipose tissue, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a hollow cannula with a blunt tip;

providing a variable pulselength laser source with emitting characteristics for generating a laser beam having an intensity and a wavelength for causing ablation of connective structure in cellulite and adipose tissue;

generating a variable pulselength laser beam with said variable pulselength laser source;

arranging an optical fiber inside said cannula with another end of said fiber connected to an output of said variable pulselength laser source;

placing the blunt tip of the cannula underneath the skin of a patient and bringing a distal firing tip of said optical fiber beyond the tip of the cannula and adjacent connective structure of tissue in the cellulite and adipose tissue;

irradiating said connective structure in the cellulite and adipose tissue with said variable pulselength laser beam to cause photoacoustic ablation of the connective structure of the tissue;

generating said variable pulselength laser beam to cauterize blood vessels in the tissue damaged by said irradiating; and

visualizing the distal tip of the optical fiber beyond the tip of the cannula using a means for visualization selected from the group consisting of optical techniques, X-ray, sonic imaging, MRI, CAT-scan or other spectral analysis.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the following step:

delivering wound healing compounds, lipotherapy and/or meseotherapy drugs through the hollow cannula to adjacent the laser treated connective structure in cellulite and adipose tissue.

3. A method for treating cellulite and adipose tissue in the face of a patient to reduce the appearance of nasal labial folds the method comprising the steps of:

providing a hollow cannula with a blunt tip and an optical fiber inside said cannula with one end of said optical fiber extendable through the cannula and beyond the blunt tip of said cannula;

generating a variable pulselength laser beam through said optical fiber with an intensity and a wavelength for ablating the connective structure of the tissue;

moving said tip of said optical fiber beyond the blunt tip of said cannula into connective structure of the adipose tissue on the face of the patient;

irradiating connective structure of the tissue with said variable pulselength laser beam from said optical fiber to cause photoacoustic ablation of the connective tissue, thus reducing the appearance of the nasal labial folds; and

visualizing the distal tip of the optical fiber beyond the tip of the cannula using a means for visualization selected from the group consisting of optical techniques, X-ray, sonic imaging, MRI, CAT-scan or other spectral analysis.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising the following step:

delivering wound healing compounds, lipotherapy and/or meseotherapy drugs through the hollow cannula to adjacent the laser treated connective structure in cellulite and adipose tissue.

5. A method for treating cellulite and adipose tissue in bags beneath the lower eyelid of a patient to improve the appearance of the bags, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a hollow cannula with a blunt tip and an optical fiber inside said cannula with one end of said optical fiber extendable through the cannula and beyond the blunt tip of said cannula;

generating a variable pulselength laser beam through said optical fiber with an intensity and a wavelength for ablating the connective structure of the tissue;

moving said tip of said optical fiber beyond the blunt tip of said cannula into connective structure of the adipose tissue in the bags beneath the lower eyelid of the patient;

irradiating connective structure of the tissue with said variable pulselength laser beam from said optical fiber to cause photoacoustic ablation of the connective tissue, thus reducing the appearance of the bags beneath the lower eyelid; and

visualizing the distal tip of the optical fiber beyond the tip of the cannula using a means for visualization selected from the group consisting of optical techniques, X-ray, sonic imaging, MRI, CAT-scan or other spectral analysis.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising the following step:

delivering wound healing compounds, lipotherapy and/or meseotherapy drugs through the hollow cannula to adjacent the laser treated connective structure in cellulite and adipose tissue.
