Abstract

Techniques for joint fusion are described, including a screw comprising a head having a partially flat surface and an opening for receiving a screwdriver tip, the head able to fit within a drill guide, a tip having another opening, a shaft extending from the head to the tip, the shaft having a plurality of holes and a thread on an external surface of the shaft, and a cannula within the shaft extending from the opening to the another opening.

Claims (26)

1. A screw, comprising:

a shaft body extending from a head to a tip, a plurality of slots defined by the shaft body and a plurality of shaft grooves defined by the shaft body and disposed linearly with each other from approximately the head to the tip, each slot positioned serially between a pair of shaft grooves along a longitudinal direction of the shaft body, each slot having a transverse dimension that is greater than a transverse dimension of each of the shaft grooves, the shaft body defining a cannula within the shaft body from the head to the tip, each slot of the plurality of slots extending to the cannula and each shaft groove of the plurality of shaft grooves extending through the threads and into the shaft body forming a groove within and along the shaft body, with the plurality of shaft grooves each having a maximum shaft groove width that is less than a maximum slot width of each of the plurality of slots, the maximum shaft groove width and the maximum slot width measured substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction; and

threads disposed on an external surface of the shaft body, the threads being discontinuous at each slot and at each shaft groove.

2. The screw of claim 1 , wherein each slot creates an opening between the cannula and tissue surrounding the shaft body.

3. The screw of claim 1 , wherein each slot is substantially oval.

4. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the head, the tip, and the shaft body are fabricated from a medical grade titanium alloy.

5. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the head is configured to fit within a drill guide's cannula.

6. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the tapered end is operative to guide the screw into a pilot hole drilled into a bone.

7. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the head includes an opening that is configured to receive a loading port of a packing plunger assembly, the packing plunger assembly configured to dispense a material into the cannula.

8. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the head includes an opening that includes a plurality of grooves configured to receive a plurality of lobes on a screwdriver tip.

9. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the cannula is configured to hold a material, the material configured to enter a joint through one or more of the plurality of slots.

10. The screw of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of slots and the plurality of shaft grooves are disposed at approximately ninety degrees from one another.

11. The screw of claim 1 , wherein:

the slots are defined by inner walls of the shaft body extending between an exterior of the screw and the cannula within the screw body;

the threads have major diameters and minor diameters; and

cross-sectional surfaces of the threads through the major diameters are continuous with the inner walls defining the slot.

12. A screw, comprising:

a shaft body extending from a head to a tip, a plurality of elongated slots defined by the shaft body and a plurality of shaft grooves defined by the shaft body and disposed linearly with each other from approximately the head to the tip, each elongated slot positioned serially between a pair of shaft grooves, the shaft body defining a cannula within the shaft body, from the head to the tip, each slot of the plurality of slots extending to the cannula and each shaft groove of the plurality of shaft grooves extending through the threads and into the shaft body forming a groove within and along the shaft body, wherein the plurality of slots and plurality of shaft grooves are disposed at approximately ninety degrees or less from each other, and wherein the plurality of shaft grooves each have a maximum shaft groove width that is less than a maximum slot width of each of the plurality of slots, the maximum shaft groove width and the maximum slot width measured substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal direction of the shaft body; and

threads disposed on an external surface of the shaft body, the threads are discontinuous at each slot and at each shaft groove.

13. The screw of claim 12 , wherein each slot is substantially oval.

14. The screw of claim 12 , wherein each slot is capsule-shaped.

15. The screw of claim 12 , wherein the head includes an opening and the opening in the head is configured to receive a screwdriver tip having a six point shape.

16. The screw of claim 15 , wherein the tip includes another opening, and the opening in the head is configured to receive a screwdriver tip having a cross shape.

17. The screw of claim 15 , wherein the cannula, the opening and the another opening are configured to fit over a guide pin.

18. The screw of claim 12 , wherein each of the plurality of shaft grooves has a first width, and each of the plurality of slots has a second width that is greater than the first width.

19. The screw of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of shaft grooves and the plurality of slots are linearly aligned with one another.
