Abstract

A method for determining color information of an object, wherein data is generated of the object with an image generation device having a field of view. The object and a reference implement having one or more regions of predetermined optical properties are positioned in the field of view. Data is generated of the reference implement, which includes a positional location attribute, based on which a position of the one or more regions of predetermined optical properties is determined by a processing system without operator identification of the position of the reference implement in the field of view. Color information of the object is generated by adjusting the data generated of the object based on the data generated of the reference implement. The color information may include value, chroma and hue information, RGB values, XYZ coordinates, or Lab values, and may be transmitted electronically to a remote location.

Claims (30)

1. A method for determining shade information, comprising:

determining color information of an object, wherein the color information is determined by:

generating data of the object with an image generation device having a field of view, wherein the object and a reference implement having one or more regions of predetermined optical properties are positioned in the field of view of the image generation device, wherein the reference implement is positioned near the object;

generating data of the reference implement with the image generation device, wherein the reference implement includes a positional location attribute, wherein based on the positional location attribute a position of the one or more regions of predetermined optical properties of the reference implement in the field of view of the image generation device is determined by a processing system without operator identification of the position in the field of view of the image generation device;

generating color information of the object by adjusting the data generated of the object based on the data generated of the reference implement; and

determining shade information, wherein the color information is used to determine a closest match or matches of shade values, wherein data for the shade values are stored in memory accessed by the processing system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color information comprises value, chroma and hue information.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the color information comprises RGB values, XYZ coordinates, or Lab values.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the shade information is transmitted electronically to a remote location.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the shade information is transmitted via a telecommunication channel.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the shade information is transmitted via a LAN or WAN.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein human skin is positioned within the field of view of the image generation device.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the shade information is used to electronically output a proposed material or materials.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein an image of the object is displayed, wherein data indicative of the shade information of the object in one or more particular regions is displayed in an overlaid manner over the one or more particular regions.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the object and the reference implement are positioned so as to be subject to a substantially corresponding lighting condition.

11. A method for determining color information of an object, comprising:

determining color information of the object, wherein the color information is determined by:

generating data of the object with an image generation device having a field of view, wherein the object and a reference implement having one or more regions of predetermined optical properties are positioned in the field of view of the image generation device, wherein the reference implement is adapted to be positioned near the object;

generating data of the reference implement with the image generation device, wherein the reference implement includes a positional location attribute, wherein based on the positional location attribute a position of the one or more regions of predetermined optical properties of the reference implement in the field of view of the image generation device is determined by a processing system without operator identification of the position of the reference implement in the field of view of the image generation device;

generating color information of the object by adjusting the data generated of the object based on the data generated of the reference implement; and

outputting the color information of the object for one or more regions of the object.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the color information comprises value, chroma and hue information.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the color information comprises RGB values, XYZ coordinates, or Lab values.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the color information is transmitted electronically to a remote location.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the color information is transmitted via a telecommunication channel.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the color information is transmitted via a LAN or WAN.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein human skin is positioned within the field of view of the image generation device.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the color information is used to electronically output a proposed material or materials.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein an image of the object is displayed, wherein data indicative of the color information of the object in one or more particular regions is displayed in an overlaid manner over the one or more particular regions.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the object and the reference implement are positioned so as to be subject to a substantially corresponding lighting condition.
