Abstract

A system and method for remote home monitoring and intercom communication. An indicator is received for activating an interactive feature of a telephone. A determination is made whether the indicator authorizes the interactive feature. The audio interface of the telephone is activated.

Claims (35)

1. A method of interacting with a telephone comprising:

receiving a dialed telephone number from a subscriber;

receiving an additional input from the subscriber to activate an interactive feature of the telephone, the interactive feature being selected from a plurality of interactive features comprising at least a monitor mode and a full-duplex intercom mode providing for communication between the subscriber and a party located at the telephone without any input from the party located at the telephone;

entering the telephone into an off-hook monitoring mode if the additional input activates the off-hook monitoring mode; and

entering the telephone into an off-hook full-duplex intercom mode if the additional input activates the off-hook full-duplex intercom mode.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising playing a selection prompt to the calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that the plurality of interactive features are available for activation.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional input comprises at least one of a code, an identifier, a password or a voice command.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional input comprises a command initiating a selected interactive feature and a separate security input.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising

terminating the interactive feature when the subscriber enters input to terminate the interactive feature.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising causing the telephone to play an audible alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising causing the telephone to display a visual alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of receiving a dialed telephone number from a subscriber is performed by any of a mobile switching center and a local exchange.

9. A monitoring system comprising:

a function trigger for intercepting an incoming call from a subscriber destined to a telephone number; and

logic associated with the function trigger, the logic being configured to perform the following steps upon the interception of an incoming call from the subscriber:

receiving an additional input from the subscriber to activate an interactive feature of a telephone, the interactive feature being selected from a plurality of interactive features comprising at least a monitor mode and a full duplex intercom mode providing for communication between the subscriber and a party located at the telephone without any input from the party located at the telephone;

entering the telephone into an off-hook monitoring mode if the additional input activates an off-hook monitoring mode; and

entering the telephone into an off-hook full-duplex intercom mode if the additional input activates the off-hook full-duplex intercom mode.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising a memory for recording a monitored or an intercom communication.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the logic associated with the function trigger is further configured to play a selection prompt to the calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that the plurality of interactive features are available for activation.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the logic associated with the function trigger is further configured to receive additional input comprising at least one of a code, an identifier, a password or a voice command.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the logic associated with the function trigger is further configured to cause the telephone to play an audible alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the logic associated with the function trigger is further configured to cause the telephone to display a visual alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.

15. A communication device configured to provide interactive features, the device comprising:

a processing unit for processing a set of instructions; and

a memory configured to store the set of instructions, wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to:

receive an additional input from a subscriber to activate an interactive feature of the communication device, the interactive feature being selected from a plurality of interactive features comprising at least a monitor mode and a full-duplex intercom mode providing for communication between the subscriber and a party located at the telephone without any input from the party located at the telephone;

enter the communication device into an off-hook monitoring mode if the additional input activates an off-hook monitoring mode; and

enter the communication device into an off-hook full-duplex intercom mode if the additional input activates the full-duplex off-hook intercom mode.

16. The device of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to play a selection prompt to the calling subscriber, the selection prompt indicating that the plurality of interactive features are available for activation.

17. The device of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to receive additional input comprising at least one of a code, an identifier, a password or a voice command.

18. The device of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to receive additional input comprising a command initiating a selected interactive feature and a separate security input.

19. The device of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to play an audible alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.

20. The device of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions provides for the communications device to display a visual alert upon activation of a selected interactive feature.
