Abstract

An enhanced metadata structure and associated process is provided which captures and stores metadata gathered about the source and usage of a media asset or file. The source and usage metadata is integrated, such as by encoding within the enhanced media file, as the media asset is transferred and used. The integrated metadata accumulates, as a trail of source information and usage information in the enhanced media asset, and can be extracted upon arrival at a target computer system.

Claims (36)

1. A method comprising:

detecting, using at least one processor, access of a digital media file, the digital media file comprising a media content portion and a media history portion;

tracking, using the at least one processor, usage of the digital media file by a recipient of the digital media file; and

integrating information regarding the tracked usage within the digital media file.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content portion of the digital media file comprises one or more of a video asset, a text asset, a sound asset, a page-layout asset, a pixel-based asset, a vector-based asset, an animation asset, a data asset, or a multimedia asset.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking, using the at least one processor, usage of the digital media file comprises tracking a modification of the digital media file by the recipient of the digital media file.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the media content portion of the digital media file comprises a digital photograph.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein integrating information regarding the tracked usage within the digital media file comprises encoding information regarding the tracked usage within the media history portion of the digital media file.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein integrating information regarding the tracked usage within the digital media file comprises integrating metadata associated with the tracked usage within the media history portion of the digital media file.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracking, using the at least one processor, usage of the digital media file comprises tracking processing of the digital media file by the recipient of the digital media file; and

wherein integrating information regarding the tracked usage within the digital media file comprises integrating information associated with the tracked processing of the digital media file within the media history portion of the digital media file.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information regarding the tracked usage comprises an identification of the recipient of the digital media file.

9. A method comprising:

determining, using at least one processor, information regarding usage of a digital media file by a first user that receives the digital media file, the information being integrated within the digital media file, wherein the digital media file comprises a media content portion and a media history portion;

storing the information in a database;

receiving, from a second user associated with the first user, a request for the information regarding usage of the digital media file; and

providing, to the second user, access to the information.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the media content portion of the digital media file comprises one or more of a video asset, a text asset, a sound asset, a page-layout asset, a pixel-based asset, a vector-based asset, an animation asset, a data asset, or a multimedia asset.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining, using at least one processor, information regarding usage of the digital media file comprises identifying the information from the media history portion of the digital media file.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein identifying the information from the media history portion of the digital media file comprises identifying the information encoded into the digital media file.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein identifying the information from the media history portion of the digital media file comprises identifying metadata associated with the digital media file from a usage audit trail incorporated within the media history portion of the digital media file.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising extracting the information from within the digital media file prior to storing the information in the database.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein extracting the information from within the digital media file comprises extracting metadata associated with the digital media file from a usage audit trail incorporated within the media history portion of the digital media file.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining, using at least one processor, information regarding usage of the digital media file comprises determining information associated with modifications of the digital media file;

wherein storing the information in the database comprises storing the information associated with the modifications to the digital media file in the database; and

wherein providing access to the information comprises providing access to the information associated with the modifications to the digital media file.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the media content portion of the digital media file comprises a digital video or a digital photograph.

18. A computer program product for use at a computer system, the computer program product comprising one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media having stored thereon computer-executable instructions that, when executed at a processor, cause the computer system to:

detect access of a digital media file, the digital media file comprising a media content portion and a media history portion;

track usage of the digital media file by a recipient of the digital media file; and

integrate information regarding the tracked usage within the media history portion of the digital media file.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the media content portion of the digital media file comprises a digital video or a digital photograph.

20. The computer program product of claim 18 , further comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the computer system to track one or more of: processing the digital media file, modifying the digital media file, or rating the digital media file.

21. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein integrating information regarding the tracked usage within the digital media file comprises encoding metadata associated with the tracked usage in a usage audit trail within the media history portion of the digital media file.

22. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the computer system is a mobile electronic device.

23. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the information regarding the tracked usage comprises an identification of a source of the digital media file.
