Abstract

Instant messaging (IM) entities may be invited to an electronic calendar event using an instant message. Selecting the IM entities as invitees to the event may include dragging and dropping names of the IM entities from a buddy list of an IM application to an event from an electronic calendar application, or vice versa. A method of inviting an entity to a calendar event includes providing a calendar event from a calendar application and recognizing, by the calendar application, an IM entity as an invitee to the event.

Claims (55)

1. A method, comprising:

identifying electronic content comprising a first electronic message to be shared with a recipient from a sender;

sending the first electronic message via a first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and a second electronic message related to the first electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient;

providing an indication to the sender that the electronic content has not been seen by the recipient;

detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient accesses the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient; and

in response to the detected access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient is able to access the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient, removing the second electronic message from the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and modifying the indication to the sender.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an online presence for the recipient; and

identifying the first or second delivery mechanism based at least in part on the determined online presence for the recipient.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a location of the recipient; and

identifying the first or second delivery mechanism based at least in part on the determined location of the recipient.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting the indication to the sender that the electronic content has not been seen prior to detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism; and

upon detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message, removing the indication.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first delivery mechanism comprises e-mail.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 ,

wherein sending the second electronic message related to the first electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient comprises sending an instant message to a queue of instant messages; and

wherein removing the second electronic message comprises removing the instant message from the queue of instant messages.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein sending the second electronic message comprises providing, to the recipient, an alert associated with the electronic content.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the electronic content comprises a file specific to an application.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the electronic content comprises a calendar event specific to a calendar application.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 , further comprising providing, to the recipient, an invitation to the calendar event.

11. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism comprises detecting that the recipient accesses an email.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second delivery mechanism comprises instant messaging.

13. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

identify electronic content comprising a first electronic message to be shared with a recipient from a sender;

send the first electronic message via a first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and a second electronic message related to the first electronic message via a second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient;

provide an indication to the sender that the electronic content has not been seen by the recipient;

detect access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient accesses the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient; and

in response to the detected access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient is able to access the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient, remove the second electronic message from the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and modify the indication to the sender.

14. The system as recited in claim 13 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine an online presence of the recipient; and

identify the first or second delivery mechanism based at least in part on the determined online presence of the recipient.

15. The system as recited in claim 13 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine a location of the recipient; and

identify the first or second delivery mechanism based at least in part on the determined location of the recipient.

16. The system as recited in claim 13 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

present the indication to the sender that the electronic content has not been seen prior to detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism; and

upon detecting access by the recipient to the first electronic message, removing the indication.

17. The system as recited in claim 13 ,

wherein sending the second electronic message related to the first electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient comprises sending an instant message to a queue of instant messages; and

wherein removing the second electronic message comprises removing the instant message from the queue of instant messages.

18. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein sending the second electronic message comprises providing, to the recipient, an alert associated with the electronic content.

19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause a computer system to:

identify electronic content comprising a first electronic message to be shared with a recipient from a sender;

send the first electronic message via a first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and a second electronic message related to the first electronic message via a second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient;

provide an indication to the sender that the electronic content has not been seen by the recipient;

detect access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient accesses the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient; and

in response to the detected access by the recipient to the first electronic message via the first delivery mechanism associated with the recipient before the recipient is able to access the second electronic message via the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient, remove the second electronic message from the second delivery mechanism associated with the recipient and modify the indication to the sender.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium as recited in claim 19 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the computer system to:

determine an online presence of the recipient; and

identify the first or second delivery mechanism based at least in part on the determined online presence of the recipient.
