Abstract

This application relates to information analysis and more particularly to a system and method for interactive visual representation of information content and relationships using layouts and gestures. A visualization tool is provided which facilitates both ad-hoc and more formal analytical tasks as a flexible and expressive thinking environment. The tool provides a space focused on ‘Human Interaction with Information’ and enabling evidence marshalling. Capabilities of the tool include put-this-there cognition, automatic analysis templates, and gestures for the fluid expression of thought and scalability mechanisms to support large analysis tasks.

Claims (23)

1. A system for facilitating information analysis tasks comprising:

a data processing system configured to execute a visualisation tool comprising:

an information retrieval system for browsing and extracting a plurality of information excerpts from information sources for display of the extracted information excerpts; in the user interface via received user input to define the information excerpts;

a user interface for marshalling evidence, said user interface configured to provide a space within which to visually display information excerpts represented as information objects for visual cognition, wherein the user interface is configured to represent the information objects as objects movable in said space; an assertion group object displayed on the user interface to refute or support an assertion, the assertion group object having at least one assertion gate for supporting the assertion and at least one assertion gate for refuting the assertion, the assertion group object monitors the position of the movable information objects relative to the location of the assertion gates and determines the connection of the information objects to the assertion automatically;

wherein the assertion gates are visually represented on the user interface and the assertion gates provide visual indication when an information object is moved through them.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the assertion group object is adapted to generate a cumulative score of information objects moved through the assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the cumulative score accounts for information objects moved through the nested assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the assertion group object is a box and the right and left edges of the box correspond to assertion gates.

5. The system of claim 4 wherein at least one of the top and bottom edge of the box correspond to the at least one assertion gate that is neutral to the assertion.

6. A system for facilitating information analysis tasks comprising:

a data processing system configured to execute a visualisation tool comprising:

an information retrieval system for browsing and extracting a plurality of information excerpts from information sources for display of the extracted information excerpts; in the user interface via received user input to define the information excerpts;

a user interface for marshalling evidence, said user interface configured to provide a space within which to visually display information excerpts represented as information objects for visual cognition, wherein the user interface is configured to represent the information objects as objects movable in said space; an assertion group object displayed on the user interface to refute or support an assertion, the assertion group object having at least one assertion gate for supporting the assertion and at least one assertion gate for refuting the assertion, the assertion group object monitors the position of the movable information objects relative to the location of the assertion gates and determines the connection of the information objects to the assertion automatically;

wherein assertion group object has at least one assertion gate that is neutral to the assertion.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the assertion group object is adapted to generate a cumulative score of information objects moved through the assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the cumulative score accounts for information objects moved through the nested assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.

9. A system for facilitating information analysis tasks comprising:

a data processing system configured to execute a visualisation tool comprising:

an information retrieval system for browsing and extracting a plurality of information excerpts from information sources for display of the extracted information excerpts; in the user interface via received user input to define the information excerpts;

a user interface for marshalling evidence, said user interface configured to provide a space within which to visually display information excerpts represented as information objects for visual cognition, wherein the user interface is configured to represent the information objects as objects movable in said space; an assertion group object displayed on the user interface to refute or support an assertion, the assertion group object having at least one assertion gate for supporting the assertion and at least one assertion gate for refuting the assertion, the assertion group object monitors the position of the movable information objects relative to the location of the assertion gates and determines the connection of the information obiects to the assertion automatically;

wherein the assertion group object contains a nested assertion group object to support or refute a nested assertion, the nested assertion group object having at least one nested assertion gate for supporting the assertion and at least one nested assertion gate for refuting the assertion, the nested assertion group object monitors the position of the movable information objects relative to the location of the nested assertion gates and determines the connection of the information objects to the nested assertion automatically.

10. The system of claim 9 ; wherein the assertion group object is adapted to generate a cumulative score of information objects moved through the assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the cumulative score accounts for information objects moved through the nested assertion gates for visualizing the level of evidence of the assertion.
