Abstract

A force feedback system and method are provided. The force feedback system includes a communication module, a processor and a motor drive module. The processor is for receiving and processing mechanical arm signals corresponding to a movement of the plurality of mechanical arms and the motor drive module is for activating the plurality of actuators. The method involves providing an interface between a controller and a plurality of mechanical arms, receiving and processing mechanical arm signals corresponding to movement of the mechanical arms activating a plurality of actuators and generating a force feedback.

Claims (28)

1. A force feedback system, the system comprising:

a communication module, the communication module configured to provide an interface between a hand controller and a plurality of mechanical arms;

a processor, the processor operatively coupled with the communication module, the processor configured to receive and process mechanical arm signals corresponding to a movement of the plurality of mechanical arms; and

a motor drive module, the motor drive module operatively coupled to a plurality of actuators coupled to the hand controller, the motor drive module activating the plurality of actuators in response to an output of the processor to generate a force feedback, the force feedback thereby assisting a user to regulate the movement of the mechanical arms by operating the hand controller;

wherein the communication module, processor, motor drive module, and plurality of actuators are housed inside the hand controller.

2. The force feedback system according to claim 1 , wherein the motor drive module generates the force feedback along an axis of a motion of the hand controller.

3. The force feedback system according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to receive a controller signal from an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement.

4. The force feedback system according to claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a plurality of encoder modules, the plurality of encoder modules operatively coupled to the motor drive module and configured to provide an actuator signal corresponding to a position of an actuator of the plurality of actuators to the motor drive module.

5. The force feedback system according to claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a sensing module, the sensing module operatively coupled to the processor, the sensing module configured to generate additional feedback information in response to a controller signal from the hand controller and transmitting the additional feedback information to the processor.

6. The force feedback system according to claim 5 , wherein the controller signal is generated by an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement.

7. The force feedback system according to claim 1 , wherein the system further comprises a status indication module, the status indication module operatively coupled to the processor, the status indication module configured to generate a status indication message in response to a status signal received from the processor.

8. The force feedback system according to claim 7 , wherein the status indication module is configured to receive a controller signal from an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement, and the controller signal used to generate the status indication message.

9. The force feedback system according to claim 7 , wherein the status indication module controls output of auxiliary devices.

10. A method of providing force feedback, the method comprising:

providing, via a communication module, an interface between a hand controller and a plurality of mechanical arms;

receiving, at a processor, mechanical arm signals corresponding to a movement of the plurality of mechanical arms;

processing the mechanical arm signals at the processor;

activating, via a motor drive module, a plurality of actuators in response to the processing; and

generating a force feedback using the plurality of actuators, the force feedback for assisting a user to regulate the movement of the mechanical arms;

wherein the communication module, processor, motor drive module, and plurality of actuators are housed inside the hand controller.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein generating the force feedback comprises generating the force feedback along an axis of a motion of the hand controller.

12. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising receiving, at the processor, a controller signal from an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement.

13. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising receiving, at the motor drive module from a plurality of encoder modules, an actuator signal corresponding to a position of an actuator of the plurality of actuators.

14. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising generating, at a sensing module, additional feedback information in response to a controller signal from the hand controller and transmitting the additional feedback information to the processor.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the controller signal is generated by an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement.

16. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising generating a status indication message using a status indication module.

17. The method according to claim 16 , further comprising receiving, at the status indication module, a controller signal from an index finger force transducer of the hand controller, the controller signal corresponding to finger movement.

18. The method according to claim 16 , further comprising controlling output of auxiliary devices using the status indication module.
