Rear integration of a suspension system and fuel tanks in fuel cell vehicles
View Patent ↗A fuel cell powered vehicle fuel storage system is disclosed having a suspension system, a fuel tank, and a support system, wherein the suspension system, fuel tank, and support system cooperate to carry vehicle structural loads and the reaction loads of the suspension system and to maximize a volume of the fuel tank.
1. A fuel storage system for a vehicle comprising:
a first fuel tank for storing a compressed fuel;
a support system adapted to be coupled to said first fuel tank and adapted to be coupled to an undercarriage of the vehicle, said support system including a subframe having a plurality of spaced apart rails, a plurality of spaced apart cross rails, and a plurality of support rails, wherein said cross rails provide cross support to said subframe and said first fuel tank is fixed to the cross rails by at least one support rail to provide cross-support to the support system; and
a suspension system coupled to said support system, said suspension system including at least one spring;
wherein,
said subframe, said suspension system, and said fuel tank cooperate to carry vehicle structural loads and reaction loads;
said first fuel tank is coupled to said subframe and provides cross support to said subframe, said fuel tank operating as a load bearing member; and
said support system is directly coupled to the suspension system.
2. The storage system of claim 1 , wherein said suspension system is coupled to said first fuel tank.
3. The storage system of claim 1 , wherein said suspension system includes leaf springs.
4. The storage system of claim 1 , wherein the spring is configured to dampen sudden shock impulse and dissipate kinetic energy generated as the vehicle is driven.
