Abstract

Segmentation messages indicative of locations of upcoming events, such as the start and end of programs and program portions, and/or rights related to the programs and program portions, are used by cable systems and the like to store programs and program portions for later retrieval and transmission to customers on request. Storage, retrieval and management of programming is thereby facilitated. Methods and systems are disclosed.

storing the created asset by the distribution system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expanse is a program.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one segmentation message comprises:

a first segmentation message defining a start of the program; and

a second segmentation message defining an end of the program, the second segmentation being positioned in the program stream after the start of the program and prior to the end of the program.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segmentation message comprises first information defining at least one of a start time and an end time of the expanse and rights-related information related to the expanse, the method comprising:

segmenting the expanse and storing the asset containing the expanse based, at least in part, on the first information and the rights-related information in the respective segmentation message.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the at least one segmentation message comprises a first segmentation message comprising information defining a start time of the expanse and a second, different segmentation message comprising rights-related information, the first segmentation message being outside the expanse, prior to a start of the expanse in the program signal stream and the second segmentation message being within the expanse.

6. The method of claim 5 , comprising:

determining if there is a right to store the expanse of the program signal stream based, at least in part, on the rights-related information in the at least one segmentation message; and

segmenting the expanse and storing the asset containing the expanse only if there is a right to store the portion.

7. The method of claim 4 , comprising:

deleting the stored asset based, at least in part, on a time defined by the rights-related information.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the rights define a right to manipulate presentation of the expanse by a user by fast forwarding, rewinding, or pausing the presentation of the expanse.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein creating the asset comprises creating the asset containing the rights-related information; and

storing the asset comprises storing the asset including the rights related information in a single memory location of a storage device comprising a plurality of memory locations.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving by the distribution system a request for a stored program, from a party;

retrieving a stored asset containing the requested program;

determining whether there is a right to transmit the stored asset based, at least in part, on the rights-related information contained within the asset; and

transmitting the requested stored program to the party, if there is a right to transmit the stored asset.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the expanse comprises a chapter of a program;

the program comprises a plurality of chapters;

the program signal stream comprises a plurality of first segmentation messages defining respective start times of respective chapters of the program;

the method comprising:

segmenting the program signal stream into a plurality of chapters based, least in part, on the at least one segmentation message;

creating a plurality of separate assets, each containing a respective chapter;

storing each asset in separate locations;

receiving a request for a program by the distribution system;

retrieving the seperately stored assets containing the chapters of the program; and

assembling the requested program from the plurality of retrieved assets.

12. The method of claim 4 , wherein the expanse comprises a program including advertising and the at least one segmentation message includes at least one first segmentation message defining a start time and an end time for the program and at least one second segmentation message defining a start time and an end time for the advertising, the method comprising:

segmenting the program from the program signal stream, based, at least in part, on the at least one first segmentation message;

creating at least one separate program asset and at least one separate advertising asset based, at least in part, on the at least one first segmentation message and the at least one second segmentation message, respectively;

storing the advertising asset separate from other assets;

receiving a request for a program, the program including the advertising;

assembling the program from stored assets with substitute advertising instead of the advertising asset, if the rights related information provides a right to substitute advertising.

13. The method of claim 4 , comprising deleting the stored asset after a predetermined period of time defined by the rights-related information.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segmentation message comprises a plurality of messages, at least two of the plurality of messages defining different program start times, the method comprising:

recording the selected program based, at least in part, on the program start time defined by the most recently received message.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segmentation message defines a start time for unscheduled content.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing at least certain of the segmentation messages from the program stream prior to broadcasting the program stream.

17. The method of claim 16 , comprising:

broadcasting the program stream by the distribution system including at least one of the at least one segmentation messages.

18. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

deriving a program identification code (PIC) from the at least one segmentation message;

wherein creating the asset comprises including the PIC in the asset.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the distribution system comprises a cable television broadcast system.

22. The method of claim 20 , comprising updating the electronic program guide data only if a difference between a start time and/or an end time defined by the segmentation message and the start time and/or end time defined by the electronic program guide data is greater than a predetermined, non-zero tolerance.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the tolerance is based, at least the part, on the program content being segmented.

creating a program signal stream comprising a serial sequence of programs, by a processor;

inserting at least one segmentation message in the program signal stream, the at least one segmentation message defining, in units of time with respect to progression of the program signal stream, an amount of time to a start of an expanse of the program, by the processor; and
