Abstract

A wireless local area network system establishes a PASSPOINT™ connection between a mobile station and a hotspot using an enhanced single SSID method or an enhanced dual SSID method. In the dual SSID method, an access point associates and authenticates a mobile device to a secondary SSID of the access point during enrollment and provisioning. After enrollment, the access point authenticates the mobile station to a primary SSID of the access point using the credential that the mobile station received from an online sign-up (“OSU”) server in connection with the secondary SSID. In the single SSID method, an access point performs two levels of authentication. During authentication, communications are limited to an 802.1x controlled port running on the mobile station and access point. After a first authentication, communications between the OSU server and the mobile station are unblocked. After the second authentication, all traffic from the mobile station is unblocked.

Claims (35)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving at a station from an access point both a primary service set identification for the access point and a secondary service set identification for the access point, wherein the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a one-to-one correspondence, and wherein the secondary service set identification is different from the primary service set identification and derived from the primary service set identification, the secondary service set identification stored in an information element hidden from a user of the station;

while displaying only the primary service set identification to the user of the station, employing the secondary service set identification for online sign-up of the station for service at the access point; and

after receiving a certificate generated for the station, using the primary service set identification to establish access for the station via the access point.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a basic service set of the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a same coverage area, a same time synchronization function, and a same Information Element.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a vendor specific information element indicating correspondence between the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification and correspondence between a primary basic service set identification and a secondary basic service set identification for online sign-up.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

using the secondary service set identification to communicate via the access point with an online sign-up server during online sign-up.

5. A method, comprising:

providing to a station from an access point both a primary service set identification for the access point and a secondary service set identification for the access point, wherein the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a one-to-one correspondence, and wherein the secondary service set identification is different from the primary service set identification and derived from the primary service set identification, the secondary service set identification stored in an information element hidden from a user of the station;

receiving communications at the access point from the station employing the secondary service set identification for online sign-up of the station for service at the access point;

receiving at the access point a certificate generated for the station; and

using the primary service set identification and the certificate to establish access for the station via the access point.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein a basic service set of the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a same coverage area, a same time synchronization function, and a same Information Element.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

transmitting a vendor specific information element indicating correspondence between the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification and correspondence between a primary basic service set identification and a secondary basic service set identification for online sign-up.

8. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

receiving communications from the station using the secondary service set identification to communicate via the access point with an online sign-up server during online sign-up.

9. A station, comprising:

a controller configured to receive from an access point both a primary service set identification for the access point and a secondary service set identification for the access point, wherein the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a one-to-one correspondence, and wherein the secondary service set identification is different from the primary service set identification and derived from the primary service set identification, the secondary service set identification stored in an information element hidden from a user of the station,

the controller configured, while displaying only the primary service set identification to a user of the station, to employ the secondary service set identification for online sign-up of the station for service at the access point, and

the controller further configured to, after receiving a certificate generated for the station, use the primary service set identification to establish access for the station via the access point.

10. The station of claim 9 , wherein a basic service set of the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a same coverage area, a same time synchronization function, and a same Information Element.

11. The station of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to receive a vendor specific information element indicating correspondence between the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification and correspondence between a primary basic service set identification and a secondary basic service set identification for online sign-up.

12. The station of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to use the secondary service set identification to communicate via the access point with an online sign-up server during online sign-up.

13. An access point, comprising:

a controller configured to

provide to a station both a primary service set identification for the access point and a secondary service set identification for the access point, wherein the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a one-to-one correspondence, and wherein the secondary service set identification is different from the primary service set identification and derived from the primary service set identification, the secondary service set identification stored in an information element hidden from a user of the station,

receive communications from the station employing the secondary service set identification for online sign-up of the station for service at the access point,

receive a certificate generated for the station, and

use the primary service set identification and the certificate to establish access for the station via the access point.

14. The access point of claim 13 , wherein a basic service set of the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification have a same coverage area, a same time synchronization function, and a same Information Element.

15. The access point of claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to transmit a vendor specific information element indicating correspondence between the primary service set identification and the secondary service set identification and correspondence between a primary basic service set identification and a secondary basic service set identification for online sign-up.

16. The access point of claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to receive communications from the station using the secondary service set identification to communicate via the access point with an online sign-up server during online sign-up.
