Abstract

A lithium-ion capacitor may include a cathode, an anode, a separator disposed between the cathode and the anode, a lithium composite material, and an electrolyte solution. The cathode and anode may be non-porous. The lithium composite material comprises a core of lithium metal and a coating of a complex lithium salt that encapsulates the core. In use, the complex lithium salt may dissolve into and constitute a portion of the electrolyte solution.

Claims (22)

1. A lithium-ion capacitor comprising a non-porous cathode, a non-porous anode, a separator positioned between the cathode and the anode, lithium composite particles positioned between the anode and the separator, and an electrolyte solution, wherein

the electrolyte solution comprises an electrolyte material dissolved in a solvent, and

at least some of the lithium composite particles individually comprise a lithium metal core and a layer of a complex lithium salt encapsulating the core.

2. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises activated carbon and the anode comprises graphite or hard carbon.

3. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the anode comprises graphite, carbon black, hard carbon, coke, or combinations thereof.

4. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the lithium composite particles are provided as a contiguous layer on a separator-facing surface of the anode.

5. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte material comprises the complex lithium salt.

6. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein the electrolyte material consists essentially of the complex lithium salt.

7. The lithium-ion capacitor according to claim 1 , wherein a weight ratio of lithium composite particles to anode material ranges from about 1:3 to 1:10.

8. A lithium-ion capacitor comprising a non-porous cathode attached to a positive current collector, a non-porous anode attached to a negative current collector, a separator positioned between the cathode and the anode, an electrolyte solution, and lithium composite particles positioned between the non-porous anode and the separator, wherein at least some of the lithium composite particles individually comprise a lithium metal core and a layer of a complex lithium salt encapsulating the core.

9. A method of producing a lithium-ion capacitor, comprising:

providing a non-porous cathode, a non-porous anode, a separator, a solvent, and a lithium composite material comprising lithium composite particles, wherein at least some of the lithium composite particles individually comprise a lithium metal core and a layer of a complex lithium salt encapsulating the core;

positioning the separator between the cathode and the anode;

positioning the lithium composite material between the anode and the separator to form an electrode set; and

contacting the electrode set with the solvent.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the solvent dissolves the complex lithium salt.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the lithium composite particles have an average particle size of about 500 microns or less.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the cathode comprises activated carbon and the anode comprises graphite or hard carbon.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the lithium composite material is provided as a contiguous layer.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the lithium composite material is provided as a contiguous layer on a separator-facing surface of the anode.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein hard carbon is produced by carbonizing a phenolic resin and washing the carbonized phenolic resin with ammonia and hydrochloric acid.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the resin is carbonized at a temperature of at least about 1000° C.
