Abstract

A system of tracking tool information includes affixing a machine readable label, such as a barcode, such that the label doesn't interfere with tool functionality. This allows tool manufacturers to provide information about the tool, such as specifications, recalls, recommended hours of usage, liens and so forth, with that information “following” the tool. Authorized users can scan the barcode, log into a website, upload the scanned barcode, and view or edit the associated information.

Claims (30)

1 . A system for substantially permanently linking information to a device, said system including:

a. a tool;

b. a barcode connected to said tool, said barcode including machine-readable data;

c. a barcode reader for inputting said machine-readable data; and

d. a processor for translating said machine-readable data.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein said tool is a mold and die.

3 . The system of claim 1 further including a barcode plate in direct contact with said barcode.

4 . The system of claim 1 further including a plaque in direct contact with said tool.

5 . The system of claim 1 further including an output display for presenting translated machine-readable data.

6 . The system of claim 5 wherein said output display is integrated with said barcode reader.

7 . A method of managing information including the steps of:

a. Affixing a unique barcode to a product, said barcode including machine-readable information about said product, said machine-readable information stored on a processor;

b. Providing said product with said barcode to a user for integration of said product into a machine;

c. Directing said user to access a website, said website communicatively coupled to said processor;

d. Directing said user to scan said barcode with a bar scanner, and to upload said barcode to said website; and

e. Providing information about said product to said users, said information provided by said processor and displayed on said bar scanner.

8 . The method of claim 7 wherein said step of affixing a unique barcode to a product includes the step of affixing a unique barcode wherein said machine-readable information is unique to said product.

9 . The method of claim 7 wherein said step of affixing a unique barcode to a product includes the step of selecting a location on said product which will not interfere with the function of said machine.

10 . A method of tracking tool-related information including the steps of:

a. Providing information about a tool, said information routed to a processor;

b. Receiving a unique barcode which is associated with said information;

c. Affixing said barcode to said tool;

d. Scanning said barcode with a barcode reader; and

e. Displaying said information.

11 . The method of claim 10 wherein said step of providing information about a tool includes providing information selected from tool manufacturer; tool manufacture date; tool construction specifications;

tool usage specifications; liens on the tool; and tool ownership.

12 . The method of claim 10 wherein said step of receiving the unique barcode includes receiving the unique barcode by mail.

13 . The method of claim 10 wherein said step of affixing said barcode includes affixing selected from welding, adhering, and bolting.

14 . The method of claim 10 wherein the step of displaying the information includes the step of displaying the information on said barcode reader.

15 . The method of claim 10 further including the step of updating said information.
