Abstract

Example methods disclosed herein include, in response to receiving a first message associated with a first registration request for a device, determining whether the device is currently assigned to a first call processor and performing a load balancing procedure to reassign the device to one of a plurality of call processors including the first call processor, the load balancing procedure to bias reassignment to the first call processor in response to the device being determined to be currently assigned to the first call processor. Such example methods further include, in response to receiving a second message associated with a second registration request for the device, causing the first call processor to de-register the device in response to determining that the second message is associated with a pending reassignment of the device from the first call processor to a second call processor included in the plurality of call processors.

Claims (41)

1. A method to perform load balancing in a communication network, the method comprising:

in response to receiving a first message associated with a first registration request for a user device, determining, via a logic circuit, whether the user device is currently assigned to a first call processor, the first registration request being associated with a reregistration of the user device when the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor;

in response to receiving the first message, performing, via the logic circuit, a load balancing procedure to reassign the user device to one of a plurality of call processors including the first call processor, the load balancing procedure to bias reassignment to the first call processor in response to the user device being determined to be currently assigned to the first call processor; and

in response to receiving a second message associated with a second registration request for the user device, causing the first call processor to de-register the user device in response to determining that the second message is associated with a pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor included in the plurality of call processors.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising:

storing records identifying call processor assignments to user devices in a database accessible by the logic circuit; and

accessing the records to determine whether the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein to bias reassignment to the first call processor, the load balancing procedure is to reassign the user device to the first call processor unless the first call processor is determined to be overloaded.

The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first message is received at a home subscriber server in an Internet protocol multimedia subsystem network, the first message comprises a first DIAMETER user authentication request received from an interrogating call session control function, and the second message comprises a second DIAMETER user authentication request received from the interrogating call session control function.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising:

storing records identifying current call processor assignments and pending call processor reassignments in a database accessible by the logic circuit;

accessing the records to determine whether the second message is associated with the pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor.

The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein causing the first call processor to de-register the user device comprises sending a DIAMETER registration termination request to the first call processor, the DIAMETER registration termination request including a reason code indicating that new server has been assigned.

7. A tangible machine readable memory comprising machine readable instructions which, when executed, cause a machine to perform operations comprising:

in response to receiving a first message associated with a first registration request for a user device, determining whether the user device is currently assigned to a first call processor, the first registration request being associated with a reregistration of the user device when the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor;

in response to receiving the first message, performing a load balancing procedure to reassign the user device to one of a plurality of call processors including the first call processor, the load balancing procedure to bias reassignment to the first call processor in response to the user device being determined to be currently assigned to the first call processor; and

in response to receiving a second message associated with a second registration request for the user device, causing the first call processor to de-register the user device in response to determining that the second message is associated with a pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor included in the plurality of call processors.

8. The machine readable memory as defined in claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

storing records identifying call processor assignments to user devices in a database; and

accessing the records to determine whether the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor.

9. The machine readable memory as defined in claim 7 , wherein to bias reassignment to the first call processor, the load balancing procedure is to reassign the user device to the first call processor unless the first call processor is determined to be overloaded.

The machine readable memory as defined in claim 7 , wherein the first message is received at a home subscriber server in an Internet protocol multimedia subsystem network, the first message comprises a first DIAMETER user authentication request received from an interrogating call session control function, and the second message comprises a second DIAMETER user authentication request received from the interrogating call session control function.

11. The machine readable memory as defined in claim 7 , wherein the operations further comprise:

storing records identifying current call processor assignments and pending call processor reassignments in a database;

accessing the records to determine whether the second message is associated with the pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor.

The machine readable memory as defined in claim 7 , wherein causing the first call processor to de-register the user device comprises sending a DIAMETER registration termination request to the first call processor, the DIAMETER registration termination request including a reason code indicating that new server has been assigned.

13. A system to perform load balancing in a communication network, the system comprising:

a memory having machine readable instructions stored thereon; and

a logic circuit to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising:

in response to receiving a first message associated with a first registration request for a user device, determining whether the user device is currently assigned to a first call processor, the first registration request being associated with a reregistration of the user device when the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor;

in response to receiving the first message, performing a load balancing procedure to reassign the user device to one of a plurality of call processors including the first call processor, the load balancing procedure to bias reassignment to the first call processor in response to the user device being determined to be currently assigned to the first call processor; and

in response to receiving a second message associated with a second registration request for the user device, causing the first call processor to de-register the user device in response to determining that the second message is associated with a pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor included in the plurality of call processors.

14. The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise:

storing records identifying call processor assignments to user devices in a database; and

accessing the records to determine whether the user device is currently assigned to the first call processor.

15. The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein to bias reassignment to the first call processor, the load balancing procedure is to reassign the user device to the first call processor unless the first call processor is determined to be overloaded.

The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the first message is received at a home subscriber server in an Internet protocol multimedia subsystem network, the first message comprises a first DIAMETER user authentication request received from an interrogating call session control function, and the second message comprises a second DIAMETER user authentication request received from the interrogating call session control function.

17. The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the operations further comprise:

storing records identifying current call processor assignments and pending call processor reassignments in a database;

accessing the records to determine whether the second message is associated with the pending reassignment of the user device from the first call processor to a second call processor.

The system as defined in claim 13 , wherein causing the first call processor to de-register the user device comprises sending a DIAMETER registration termination request to the first call processor, the DIAMETER registration termination request including a reason code indicating that new server has been assigned.
