Abstract

An integrated circuit (“IC”) may include clock and data recovery (“CDR”) circuitry for recovering data information from an input serial data signal. The CDR circuitry may include a reference clock loop and a data loop. A retimed (recovered) data signal output by the CDR circuitry is monitored by other control circuitry on the IC for a communication change request contained in that signal. Responsive to such a request, the control circuitry can change an operating parameter of the CDR circuitry (e.g., a frequency division factor used in either of the above-mentioned loops). This can help the IC support communication protocols that employ auto-speed negotiation.

Claims (14)

1. An integrated circuit (“IC”) comprising:

phase-locked loop (“PLL”) circuitry including charge pump circuitry, voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry, and phase-frequency detector circuitry coupled to one another in a closed loop series; and

circuitry for supplying a controllably variable amount of charge pump current to the charge pump circuitry, wherein the charge pump circuitry and the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry are used in a data loop to generate a recovered data signal and wherein the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry is controllable to change a frequency of the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry based on data in the recovered data signal.

2. The integrated circuit defined in claim 1 further comprising:

programmable circuitry for controlling the circuitry for supplying to determine the amount of charge pump current the circuitry for supplying supplies to the charge pump circuitry.

3. The integrated circuit defined in claim 1 wherein the circuitry for supplying supplies a controllable number of multiples of a nominal amount of charge pump current to the charge pump circuitry.

4. The integrated circuit defined in claim 1 wherein the data loop includes phase detector circuitry that outputs the recovered data signal, and wherein the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry is controllable based on data in the recovered data signal to facilitate auto-speed negotiation.

5. An integrated circuit (“IC”) comprising:

phase-locked loop circuitry including charge pump circuitry, voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry, and phase-frequency detector circuitry coupled to one another in a closed loop series, and

controllably variable voltage regulator circuitry for supplying a regulated voltage to the charge pump circuitry, the regulated voltage being controllably variable, wherein the charge pump circuitry and the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry are used in a data loop to generate a recovered data signal and wherein the voltage-controlled oscillator circuitry is controllable based on data in the recovered data signal, wherein the data loop includes phase detector circuitry that outputs the recovered data signal.

6. The integrated circuit defined in claim 5 further comprising:

power supply circuitry for supplying a power supply signal having a power supply voltage to the controllably variable regulator circuitry, the controllably variable regulator circuitry being able to controllably vary the regulated voltage relative to the power supply voltage.

7. The integrated circuit defined in claim 5 further comprising:

programmable circuit elements for controlling the regulated voltage supplied by the controllably variable voltage regulator circuitry.
