Abstract

The disclosure is directed to a surface having a binding component applied thereto for the adsorption or capture of pathogens and organic molecules or materials. The surface may be a component of a porous or nonporous substrate. The binding component may also bind a photocatalyst to the surface for photocatalytic destruction of the captured pathogens and organic molecules or materials.

Claims (37)

1. A functionalized component, comprising:

a substrate having a surface;

a high charge density binding component attached to the surface and capable of binding a microorganism or organic molecule or organic material thereto; and

a photocatalyst bound to the high charge density binding component;

wherein the photocatalyst comprises a delaminated sodium nonatitanate; and

wherein the high charge density binding component comprises aluminum or gallium polycationic clusters.

2. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is porous.

3. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is transparent.

4. The functionalized component of claim 1 , further comprising:

an organic polyion comprising a polymer functionalized with an anion selected from a group consisting of sulfonates, carbonates and nitrates.

5. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the delaminated sodium nonatitanate is peroxide-modified so that peroxide ligands replace at least some oxo and hydroxy ligands of the delaminated sodium nonatitanate.

6. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the delaminated sodium nonatitanate comprises tetrabutylammonium hydroxide as a result of being delaminated by the tetrabutylammonium hydroxide.

7. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the delaminated sodium nonatitanate comprises water.

8. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein the high charge density binding component further comprises a silane coupling agent disposed between the aluminum or gallium polycationic clusters and the substrate.

9. The functionalized component of claim 8 , wherein the silane coupling agent is an aminosilane or disilane having metal-based cations and/or polycations.

10. The functionalized component of claim 9 , wherein the aminosilane or disilane having metal-based cations and/or polycations is selected from a group consisting of triply-charged diethylene-triamino-propylsilane (DE-TA-PS), didecylmethl-aminopropylsilane (DDM-APS), tributyl-aminopropylsilane (TB-APS), trimethyl-aminopropylsilane (TM-APS), and aminopropylsilane (APS).

11. The functionalized component of claim 1 , further comprising:

an organic polyion.

12. The functionalized component of claim 11 , wherein the organic polyion is a sulfonate, carbonate and nitrate.

13. The functionalized component of claim 11 , wherein the organic polyion is polystyrene sulfonate.

14. The functionalized component of claim 1 , wherein aluminum or gallium polycationic clusters is selected from a group consisting of

[Al 13 O 4 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 7+ , [(AlO 4 )Al 12 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 7+ , [(GaO 4 )Al 12 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 7+ [GeAl 12 O 4 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 8+ , [(GeO 4 )Al 12 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 8+ , [Ga 13 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 24 ] 15+ , and [GaAl 12 O 4 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 7+ .

15. The functionalized component of claim 1 , further comprising:

a cationic metal coating selected from a group consisting of Al 3+ and Ba 2+ .

16. A functionalized component, comprising:

a substrate having a surface;

a high charge density binding component attached to the surface and capable of binding a microorganism or organic molecule or organic material thereto;

a cationic metal added to the high charge density binding component to form a high charge density binding component having metal-based cations and/or polycations; and

a photocatalyst bound to the high charge density binding component;

wherein the photocatalyst comprises a delaminated sodium nonatitanate; and

wherein the high charge density binding component comprises a silane coupling agent.

17. The functionalized component of claim 16 , wherein the silane coupling agent is an aminosilane or disilane having metal-based cations and/or polycations.
