Abstract

A fitting for use in fusion welding mating thermoplastic components includes a weld bead chamber to capture and conceal a bead formed as a result of the fusion weld. The weld bead chamber integrates the bead into the fitting so that the joined parts have a finished look without mechanical polishing or grinding of the completed piece. A stop ledge included in the weld bead chamber prevents over insertion of a pipe or other component into the fitting. A view window in the fitting permits inspection of the finished bead.

Claims (45)

1. An interference fit fusion weldable fitting and mating thermoplastic component for high purity fluid applications, comprising:

a thermoplastic component comprising a pipe; and

a fitting, comprising:

a body comprised of a heat fusible thermoplastic having an open end and a passageway extending into the body, the open end having a larger diameter than at least a portion of the passageway into which a mating portion of the thermoplastic component is to be inserted and also having a larger diameter than a diameter of the mating portion of the thermoplastic component to be joined to the body; and

a weld bead chamber comprising an open-faced groove formed in an inner surface of the passageway that captures and conceals excess thermoplastic material resulting from a fusion weld joining the body to the thermoplastic component;

wherein at least a portion of the body adjacent to the weld bead chamber forming the passageway has a diameter that is smaller than an outer diameter of the mating portion of the thermoplastic component to be inserted into the passageway so as to be configured for interference fit reception with the thermoplastic component;

wherein the weld bead chamber is disposed intermediate the open end of the body and the portion of the body configured for interference fit reception with the thermoplastic component; and

wherein the weld bead chamber has a diameter which is larger than the open end diameter; and

wherein the interference fit reception of the thermoplastic component with the body results in excess material being scraped off of heated surfaces as the thermoplastic component is inserted into the passageway of the fitting and forming a bead which accumulates in the weld bead chamber.

2. The fitting of claim 1 , wherein the fitting has a second weld bead chamber adjacent to, and spaced from, a second open end of the body.

3. The fitting of claim 1 , wherein the body is comprised of a polypropylene, polyethylene, polybutylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, or perfluoroalkoxy material.

4. The fitting of claim 1 , wherein the fitting includes a window for viewing excess thermoplastic material after the body is fusion welded to the mating thermoplastic component.

5. The fitting of claim 2 , wherein the body includes a bend between the first end and the second end of the body.

6. The fitting of claim 2 , wherein the body includes a T-junction between the first end and the second end of the body, and wherein the T-junction includes a third weld bead chamber adjacent to an open end thereof.

7. An interference fit fusion weldable fitting and mating thermoplastic component for high purity fluid applications, comprising:

a thermoplastic component comprising a pipe; and

a fitting, comprising:

a body comprised of a heat fusible thermoplastic having a passageway extending therein, at least a portion of the passageway having a diameter that is smaller than an outer diameter of a mating portion of the thermoplastic component so as to be configured for interference fit reception with the mating portion of the thermoplastic component, the body having an open end having a larger diameter than at least a portion of the passageway into which the mating thermoplastic component is to be inserted; and

a weld bead chamber disposed inward from the open end of the body and adjacent to the portion of the body configured for interference reception fit around the mating thermoplastic component, and configured to capture and conceal excess thermoplastic material resulting from a fusion weld joining the body to the mating thermoplastic component;

wherein the weld bead chamber comprises an open-faced groove formed in an inner surface of the passageway; and

wherein the weld bead chamber has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the open end of the body and a diameter of the passageway at the portion of the body configured for interference fit reception around the mating thermoplastic component; and

wherein the interference fit reception of the thermoplastic component with the body results in excess material being scraped off of heated surfaces as the thermoplastic component is inserted into the passageway of the fitting and forming a bead which accumulates in the weld bead chamber.

8. The fitting of claim 7 , wherein the fitting has a second weld bead chamber adjacent to, and spaced from, a second open end of the body.

9. The fitting of claim 8 , wherein a portion of the body adjacent to the first and second weld bead chambers is configured for interference fit reception around the mating thermoplastic component.

10. The fitting of claim 7 , wherein the body is comprised of a polypropylene, polyethylene, polybutylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, or perfluoroalkoxy material.

11. The fitting of claim 7 , wherein the fitting includes a window for viewing excess thermoplastic material after the body is fusion welded to the mating thermoplastic component.

12. The fitting of claim 8 , wherein the body includes a bend between the first end and the second end of the body.

13. The fitting of claim 8 , wherein the body includes a T-junction between the first end and the second end of the body, and wherein the T-junction includes a third weld bead chamber adjacent to an open end thereof.

14. The fitting of claim 1 , including a stop ledge formed in the passageway to prevent over insertion of the mating thermoplastic component into the fitting.

15. The fitting of claim 1 , wherein the weld bead chamber comprises a generally continuous groove concentric to the opening of the body adjacent thereto.

16. The fitting of claim 7 , including a stop ledge formed in the passageway to prevent over insertion of the mating thermoplastic component into the fitting.

17. An interference fit fusion weldable fitting and mating thermoplastic component for high purity fluid applications, comprising:

a thermoplastic component comprising a pipe; and

a fitting, comprising:

a body comprised of heat thermofusible material having a passageway extending therein, at least a portion of the passageway having a diameter that is smaller than an outer diameter of a mating portion of the thermoplastic component so as to be configured for interference fit reception around the mating portion of the thermoplastic component, the body having an open end having a larger diameter than the passageway at the portion of the body configured for interference fit reception of the mating thermoplastic component; and

a weld bead chamber comprising an open-faced groove formed in an inner surface of the passageway and disposed inward from the open end of the body and adjacent to the portion of the body configured for interference fit reception around the mating thermoplastic component, the weld bead chamber being configured to capture and conceal excess thermoplastic material resulting from a fusion weld joining the body to the mating thermoplastic component;

a stop ledge formed in the passageway a distance from the open end of the body to prevent over insertion of the fitting; and

a window formed in the body for viewing excess thermoplastic material after the body is fusion welded to the mating thermoplastic component;

wherein the weld bead chamber has a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the open end of the body adjacent thereto and a diameter of the passageway at the portion of the body configured for interference fit reception of the mating thermoplastic component; and

wherein the interference fit reception of the thermoplastic component with the body results in excess material being scraped off of heated surfaces as the thermoplastic component is inserted into the passageway of the fitting and forming a bead which accumulates in the weld bead chamber.

18. The fitting of claim 17 , wherein the fitting has a second weld bead chamber adjacent to, and spaced from, a second open end of the body, the second weld bead chamber having a greater diameter than the second open end of the body.
