Abstract

A system for blocking fast flow paths in geological formations includes preparing a solution of colloidal silica having a nonviscous phase and a solid gel phase. The solution of colloidal silica is injected into the geological formations while the solution of colloidal silica is in the nonviscous phase. The solution of colloidal silica is directed into the fast flow paths and reaches the solid gel phase in the fast flow paths thereby blocking flow of fluid in the fast paths.

Claims (15)

1. A method of improving efficiency of a subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide wherein the subsurface reservoir has a cap rock that may not be entirely impermeable to carbon dioxide and wherein the cap rock has pathways that would allow carbon dioxide passage and allow carbon dioxide to escape from the subsurface reservoir, comprising the steps of:

preparing a solution of colloidal silica having a nonviscous phase and a solid gel phase, wherein said solution of colloidal silica has chemical properties such that it will transform from said nonviscous phase into said solid gel phase after a predetermined amount of time that has been predicted fir said solution of colloidal silica to be present in the pathways in the cap rock,

injecting said solution of colloidal silica into the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase,

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to flow into the pathways in the cap rock in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase, and

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to transform into said solid gel phase after said predetermined amount of time when said solution of colloidal silica is in the pathways in the cap rock thereby blocking the pathways in the cap rock, preventing the carbon dioxide from escaping from the subsurface reservoir, and improving efficiency of the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide.

2. A method of improving efficiency of a subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide wherein the subsurface reservoir has a cap rock that may not be entirely impermeable to carbon dioxide and wherein the cap rock has pathways that would allow carbon dioxide passage and allow carbon dioxide to escape from the subsurface reservoir and wherein brines with densities are beneath the cap rock, comprising the steps:

preparing a solution of colloidal silica having a nonviscous phase and a solid gel phase, wherein said solution of colloidal silica has chemical properties such that it will transform from said nonviscous phase into said solid gel phase after a predetermined amount of time that has been predicted for said solution of colloidal silica to be present in the pathways in the cap rock and wherein said solution of colloidal silica has a density that is lower than the densities of said brines beneath the cap rock,

injecting said solution of colloidal silica into the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase,

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to flow into the pathways in the cap rock in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase, and

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to transform into said solid gel phase after said predetermined amount of time when said solution of colloidal silica is in the pathways in the cap rock thereby blocking the pathways in the cap rock, preventing the carbon dioxide from escaping from the subsurface reservoir, and improving efficiency of the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide.

3. A method of improving efficiency of a subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide of wherein the subsurface reservoir has a cap rock that may not be entirely impermeable to carbon dioxide and wherein the cap rock has pathways that would allow carbon dioxide passage and allow carbon dioxide to escape from the subsurface reservoir, comprising the steps of:

preparing a solution of colloidal silica having a nonviscous phase and a solid gel phase, wherein said solution of colloidal silica has silica content, colloid size, salinity, and pH, and wherein said solution of colloidal silica has chemical properties such that it will transform from said non viscous phase into said solid gel phase after a predetermined amount of time that has been predicted for said solution of colloidal silica to be present in the pathways in the cap rock, and wherein said predetermined amount of time that has been predicted fir said solution of colloidal silica to be present in the pathways in the cap rock is predetermined by adjusting said silica content, colloid size, salinity, and pH of said solution of colloidal silica,

injecting said solution of colloidal silica into the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase,

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to flow into the pathways in the cap rock in said nonviscous phase and before said solution of colloidal silica has transformed into said solid gel phase, and

allowing said solution of colloidal silica to transform into said solid gel phase after said predetermined amount of time when said solution of colloidal silica is in the pathways in the cap rock thereby blocking the pathways in the cap rock, preventing the carbon dioxide from escaping from the subsurface reservoir, and improving efficiency of the subsurface reservoir used for storage of carbon dioxide.
