Abstract

The system of the present invention is a highly integrated radio communication system with a multimedia co-processor which allows true two-way multimedia (video, audio, data) access as well as real-time biomedical monitoring in a pager-sized portable access unit. The system is integrated in a network structure including one or more general purpose nodes for providing a wireless-to-wired interface. The network architecture allows video, audio and data (including biomedical data) streams to be connected directly to external users and devices. The portable access units may also be mated to various non-personal devices such as cameras or environmental sensors for providing a method for setting up wireless sensor nets from which reported data may be accessed through the portable access unit. The reported data may alternatively be automatically logged at a remote computer for access and viewing through a portable access unit, including the user's own.

Claims (34)

1. A method for selecting a user name in a user name network for video communication over a communications network, the method comprising:

wirelessly accessing a communications network, from a local portable access unit, through a wireless connection to a general purpose node, the general purpose node coupled to the communications network;

receiving user input to log on to a user name network through the communications network, the user name network having a plurality of user names, at least one of the plurality of user names associated with a remote portable access unit logged on to the user name network and available for the video communication;

displaying the plurality of user names;

receiving a selection of a user name from the plurality of user names; and

displaying video communication received in the local portable access unit from the remote portable access unit, the video communication associated with the selected user name.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the general purpose node associates with a plurality of local portable access units and records the plurality of local portable access units in a list of connections.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

adding an additional local portable access unit to the list of connections responsive to a log on to the user name network.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

removing the additional local portable access unit to the list of connections responsive to a log off of the portable access unit network.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video communication comprises two-way video communication.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the local portable access unit and the remote portable access unit comprises an internet telephone.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the local portable access unit and the remote portable access unit is wearable.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accessing a name server; and

locating additional remote media devices that are out-of-network, through the name server.

9. A local portable access unit for selecting a user name for video communication, comprising:

means for wirelessly accessing a communications network, from a local portable access unit, through a wireless connection to a general purpose node, the general purpose node coupled to the communications network;

means for receiving user input to log on to a user name network through the communications network, the user name network having a plurality of user names, at least one of the plurality of user names associated with a remote portable access unit logged on to the user name network and available for video communication;

means for displaying the plurality of user names;

means for receiving a selection of a user name from the plurality of user names; and

means for displaying video communication received in the local portable access unit from the remote portable access unit, the video communication associated with the selected user name.

10. The local portable access unit of claim 9 , wherein the general purpose node associates with a plurality of local portable access units and records the plurality of local portable access units in a list of connections.

11. The local portable access unit of claim 10 , further comprising:

means for adding an additional local portable access unit to the list of connections responsive to a log on to the user name network.

12. The local portable access unit of claim 10 , further comprising:

means for removing the additional local portable access unit to the list of connections responsive to a log off of the portable access unit network.

13. The local portable access unit of claim 9 , wherein the video communication comprises two-way video communication.

14. The local portable access unit of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the local portable access unit and the remote portable access unit comprises an internet telephone.

15. The local portable access unit of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the local portable access unit and the remote portable access unit is wearable.

16. The local portable access unit of claim 9 , further comprising:

means for accessing a name server; and

means for locating additional remote media devices that are out-of-network, through the name server.
