Abstract

When a hobby enthusiast has recharged the battery for a remote controlled vehicle, such as a scale facsimile automobile, boat, helicopter or airplane, the battery must be connected again to the vehicle drive system, to provide power. This operation is typically performed by connecting each lead of an electronic speed controller to each corresponding lead of the battery, through a removable barrel receptacle lead and a mating barrel plug lead respectively, attached to each corresponding lead. An improved connector lead is described herein that protects components that may be attached to either lead in a connection. The charge dissipates in a resistive member that is physically coupled to a conductive member to form at least in part a first lead. When an improved lead is connected to a mating lead, the connection initially provides a charge dissipation path through the resistive member, but subsequently provides a bypass, current carrying conductive path around the resistive member from one component to another. By making use of an improved connector, electrical components are protected, not only from hot-swap current, but also from electrostatic discharge in general.

Claims (22)

1. A process for providing a charge path that dissipates an electrical charge during initial connection to an electrical device, the process comprising:

coupling a first conductive member to a first electrical polarity component, the first polarity component configured to allow a flow of electrical charge to or from a second electrical polarity component when the first and second polarity components are electrically coupled and there is a charge differential between the first and second polarity components;

electrically coupling a first resistive member to the first conductive member to form a first connector lead;

electrically coupling the first connector lead, to a first mating connector lead electrically coupled to the second electrical polarity component to provide a first electrical connection between the first and second polarity components, the first electrical connection comprising a charge path passing through the first resistive member; and

further inserting the first connector lead into the first mating connector lead to provide a second electrical connection between the first and second polarity components, the second electrical connection comprising a conductive path that at least partially bypasses the first resistive member.

2. The process of claim 1 , further comprising connecting a second connector lead to a second mating connector lead.

3. The process of claim 2 , further comprising connecting the second connector lead to one of the first and the second polarity components.

4. The process of claim 3 , wherein the second connector lead is formed at least in part by electrically coupling a second resistive member to the second connector lead to form a second conductor member.

5. The process of claim 1 , further comprising preventing inadvertent conductor-to-conductor contact by at least partially enclosing an exterior region of the first conductive member with an insulating jacket.

6. The process of claim 5 , further comprising providing a guide for physically aligning the first connector lead with the first mating connector lead during connection.

7. The process of claim 1 , further comprising providing a guide comprising a conductive shield for physically aligning the first connector lead with the first mating connector lead.

8. A process for providing a charge path that dissipates an electrical charge during initial connection of an electrical circuit, the process comprising:

coupling a first conductive member to a first electrical polarity component, the first polarity component configured to allow a flow of electrical charge to or from a second electrical polarity component when the first and second polarity components are electrically coupled and there is a charge differential between the first and second polarity components;

electrically coupling a first resistive member to the first conductive member to form a first connector lead;

electrically coupling the first connector lead to a first mating connector lead electrically coupled to the second electrical polarity component to provide a first electrical connection between the first and second polarity components, the first electrical connection comprising a charge path passing through the first resistive member; and

bypassing the first electrical connection at the electrical coupling to provide a second electrical connection between the first and second polarity components, the second electrical connection at least partially bypassing the first resistive member.

9. The process of claim 8 , further comprising electrically coupling a second connector lead to a second mating connector lead to form a convention electrical connection in the electrical circuit.

10. The process of claim 9 , further comprising electrically coupling the second connector lead to the second mating connector lead in the electrical circuit before electrically coupling the first connector lead to the first mating connector lead in the electrical circuit.

11. The process of claim 9 , wherein the second connector lead is formed at least in part by electrically coupling a second resistive member to the second connector lead to form a second conductor member.

12. The process of claim 8 , further comprising preventing inadvertent conductor-to-conductor contact by at least partially enclosing an exterior region of the first conductive member in an insulating jacket.

13. The process of claim 8 , further comprising providing a guide for physically aligning the first connector lead with the first mating connector lead during connection.

14. The process of claim 8 , further comprising providing a guide comprising a conductive shield for physically aligning the first connector lead with the first mating connector lead.
