User interfaces for a document search engine
A method includes receiving a search query, identifying a document based on the search query, and providing a search result based on the document. The search result includes, for example, an image associated with the document, an excerpt from the document that is associated with the search query, and links to other excerpts in the document that are associated with the search query. The method may also include providing other information associated with the document.
1. A method comprising:
receiving, by one or more devices, a search query that includes a search term;
identifying, by the one or more devices, a document related to the search query; and
providing, by the one or more devices, a response to the search query including information associated with the document for display in a page, wherein the information associated with the document includes:
a first excerpt that includes text from a first page, of the document, that includes the search term,
an image of the first page, of the document, that includes the first excerpt, wherein the first excerpt includes the search term and one or more other terms that are next to the search term,
an indicator that identifies an area of the image that includes the first excerpt that includes the search term and the one or more other terms that are next to the search term, and
a first link to another page of the document that includes the search term.

The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes providing multiple links for display, wherein the multiple links include one or more of a link that refers to a front cover associated with the document, a link that refers to a reference page associated with the document, a link that refers to a copyright page associated with the document, a link that refers to a table of contents associated with the document, or a link that refers to an index associated with the document.
3. The method of claim 1 ,
wherein providing the information associated with the document for display includes:
visually distinguishing, in the text of the excerpt, an occurrence of the search term from other portions of the text.
4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term; and
in response to determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term, providing information associated with the document that includes:
an excerpt from each page of the multiple pages, wherein the excerpt from each page of the multiple pages includes the search term.
5. The method of claim 1 ,
wherein the first link refers to a second excerpt from a second page of the document, wherein the document includes a set of pages that each include the search term, and the second page is a next page in the set of pages after the first page in a sequential ordering of pages; and
in response to a selection of the first link that refers to the second excerpt from the second page of the document, providing, by the one or more devices, the second excerpt for display.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes:
providing a second link for display that refers to a third excerpt that is associated with a third page that immediately precedes the first page, of the document, in descending sequential page order prior to the first page and includes the search term;
in response to a selection of the second link that refers to the third excerpt that is associated with the third page that immediately precedes the first page, of the document, in descending sequential page order prior to the first page and includes the search term, providing, by the one or more devices, the third excerpt for display.
7. The method of claim 6 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes:
providing a third link for display that refers to a page that includes multiple excerpts from multiple different pages of the document; and
in response to a selection of the third link that refers to a page that includes multiple excerpts from multiple different pages of the document, providing, by the one or more devices, the multiple excerpts from multiple different pages of the document for display.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes:
providing a set of advertisements that identifies one or multiple different documents that are each related to the document.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein one or multiple different documents are related to the document if the one or more different documents are sold by the same business that sells the document or are authored by the same author of the document.
10. A system comprising:
one or more computers and one or more storage devices storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the one or more computers, to cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
receiving a search query that includes a search term;
identifying a document related to the search query; and
providing a response to the search query including information associated with the document for display in a page, wherein the information associated with the document includes:
a first excerpt that includes text from a first page, of the document, that includes the search term,
an image of the first page, of the document, that includes the first excerpt, wherein the first excerpt includes the search term and one or more other terms that are adjacent to the search term,
an indicator that identifies an area of the image that includes the first excerpt that includes the search term and the one or more other terms that are adjacent to the search term, and
a first link to another page of the document that includes the search term.
11. The system of claim 10 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes providing multiple links for display, wherein the multiple links include one or more of a link that refers to a front cover associated with the document, a link that refers to a reference page associated with the document, a link that refers to a copyright page associated with the document, a link that refers to a table of contents associated with the document, or a link that refers to an index associated with the document.
12. The system of claim 10 ,
wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes:
visually distinguishing, in the text of the excerpt, an occurrence of the search term from other portions of the text.
13. The system of claim 10 , the operations further comprising:
determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term; and
in response to determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term, providing information associated with the document that further includes:
an excerpt from each page of the multiple pages, wherein the excerpt from each page of the multiple pages includes the search term.
14. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software comprising instructions executable by one or more computers which, upon such execution, cause the one or more computers to perform operations comprising:
receiving a search query that includes a search term;
identifying a document related to the search query; and
providing a response to the search query including information associated with the document for display in a page, wherein the information associated with the document includes:
a first excerpt that includes text from a first page, of the document, that includes the search term,
an image of the first page, of the document, that includes the first excerpt, wherein the first excerpt includes the search term and one or more other terms that are next to the search term,
an indicator that identifies an area of the image that includes the first excerpt that includes the search term and the one or more other terms that are next to the search term, and
a first link to another page of the document that includes the search term.
15. The computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes providing multiple links for display, wherein the multiple links include one or more of a link that refers to a front cover associated with the document, a link that refers to a reference page associated with the document, a link that refers to a copyright page associated with the document, a link that refers to a table of contents associated with the document, or a link that refers to an index associated with the document.
16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 ,
wherein providing the information associated with the document for display further includes:
visually distinguishing, in the text of the excerpt, an occurrence of the search term from other portions of the text.
17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , the operations further comprising:
determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term; and
in response to determining that multiple pages of the document include the search term, providing information associated with the document that further includes: an excerpt from each page of the multiple pages, wherein the excerpt from each page of the multiple pages includes the search term.
