Abstract

An email payment system and method to provide users with the ability to initiate and send payments to one more recipients via email messaging. A user interface is provided in an email client that allows a user to insert payment with the email. Payment details are collected through one or more payment modals displayed in the email client. A payment object is inserted into the body of the email and is displayed to both the sender and recipient. The payment details captured in the payment object are communicated to a payment processor. The payment processor uses electronic payment accounts associated with the corresponding sender and recipient email addresses to identify the relevant electronic payment accounts and transfer the payment between said accounts. A status of the payment transaction is tracked and displayed within the payment object of the emails residing in both the sender and recipient email client.

receiving, using the one or more computing devices, the email message including the payment object from the sender email client;

communicating, using the one or more computers, the payment transaction details and transfer instructions to a payment processor computing device in response to receiving the email message including the payment object from the sender email client, the transfer instructions comprising instructions to transfer the payment amount indicated in the payment transaction details from the sender account to the recipient account; and

synchronizing, using the one or more computers, delivery of the email message including the payment object to a recipient email client with posting by the payment processor of the payment to the sender account and the recipient account.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sender electronic payment account identifier and the recipient electronic payment account identifier are a sender email address associated with the sender account and a recipient email address associated with the recipient account, respectively.

3. The method of claim 1 , the payment instrument selected from one or more payment instruments associated with the sender account.

4. The method of claim 1 , the sender account being an electronic wallet account.

5. The method of claim 1 , the recipient payment account identifier being determined automatically by an email address entered in a “to” field of the email message.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein communicating the email message including the payment object to the recipient email client comprises routing the email message with the payment object to an email server, and routing the email message with the payment object by the email server to the recipient email account.

7. A computer program product, comprising:

a non-transitory computer-executable storage device having computer-readable program instructions embodied thereon that when executed by a computer perform a method for sending electronic payments by email messaging, the computer-executable program instructions comprising:

computer-executable program instructions to receive a request from a sender email client to attach a payment object to an email message composed in the sender email client;

computer-executable program instructions to communicate a payment object modal for presentation in the sender email client in connection with the composed email message, the payment object modal comprising fields for capturing payment transaction details, the payment transaction details comprising at least a sender electronic payment account identifier, a recipient electronic payment account identifier, a sender payment instrument, and a payment amount;

computer-executable program instructions to receive from the email client, the email message including the payment transaction details input in the payment object modal provided to the sender email client;

computer-executable program instructions to communicate a fund verification requests to an issuer computing device associated with the send payment account, the fund verification request comprising the sender payment account identifier and payment amount;

computer-executable program instructions to receive an electronic sender payment account status from the issuer computing device, the sender payment account status indicating whether a current sender payment account balance associated with the sender payment account is greater than, equal to, or less than the payment amount;

computer-executable program instructions to insert a payment object in the email message composed in the sender email client if the current sender payment account balance is greater than or equal to the payment amount, the payment object displaying at least a portion of the payment transaction details input in the payment object modal;

computer-executable program instructions to receive the email message including the payment object from the sender email client;

computer-executable program instructions to communicate the payment transaction details and transfer instructions to a payment processor computing device in response to receiving the payment transaction details from the sender email client, the transfer instructions comprising executable instructions to transfer the payment amount indicated in the payment transaction details from the sender electronic payment account to the recipient electronic payment account; and

computer-executable program instructions to synchronize delivery of the email message including the payment object to a recipient email client with posting by the payment processor of the payment to the sender account and the recipient account.

8. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the sender electronic payment account identifier and the recipient electronic payment account identifier are a sender email address and recipient email address associated with the sender electronic payment account and the recipient electronic payment account, respectively.

9. The computer program product of claim 7 , the payment instrument selected from one or more payment instruments associated with the sender electronic payment account.

10. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the sender electronic payment account and the recipient electronic payment account are electronic wallet accounts.

11. The computer program product of claim 7 , the recipient electronic payment account is determined automatically from the email address entered in the “to” field of the email message.

12. The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein communicating the email message including the payment object to the recipient email client comprises routing the email message with the payment object to an email server for delivery by the email server of the email message with the payment object to the recipient email account.

13. A system for sending electronic payments by email messaging, the system comprising:

a storage device;

a network device; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the storage device and the network device, the processor executing application code instructions that are stored in the storage device and that cause the system to:
