Abstract

Systems and methods provide automatic switching of display update properties such as screen resolution, pixel depth, and refresh rate in response to a power management event. The display update property may be decreased when power is switched from AC power to DC power, for example, when the system is unplugged from a wall outlet and is running on battery power.

Claims (45)

1. A system comprising:

a display;

at least one memory; and

at least one processor communicatively coupled to the display and the at least one memory, the at least one processor configured to:

cause display of a user interface to provide a choice of policies to take place in response to one or more power events;

receive an indication of a power event,

select a policy from a plurality of power management policies, wherein the selected policy is responsive to the power event and based at least on the chosen policy,

request to change a display property of the display based on the selected policy and wherein the display property is at least one of a color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate; and

display hardware to selectively adjust at least one display property in response to the request to change a display property.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a change in a power source from AC power to DC power and wherein change of a display property includes decrease of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a change in a power source from DC power to AC power and wherein change a display property includes increase of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a power level of a battery below a predetermined threshold and wherein change a display property includes decrease of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a power level of a battery meets or exceeds a predetermined threshold and wherein change a display property includes increase of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

6. An apparatus comprising:

at least one processor configured to:

cause display of a user interface to provide a choice of policies to take place in response to one or more power events;

receive an indication of a power event,

select a policy from a plurality of power management policies, wherein the selected policy is responsive to the power event and is based at least on a chosen policy,

request to change a display property of a display based on the selected policy and wherein the display property is at least one of a color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate; and

display hardware to selectively adjust at least one display property in response to the request to change a display property.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising the display communicatively coupled to the at least one processor and the display hardware.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a change in a power source from AC power to DC power and wherein the request to change a display property includes a request to decrease at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a change in a power source from DC power to AC power and wherein the request to change a display property includes a request to increase at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a power level of a battery below a predetermined threshold and wherein the request to change a display property includes a request to decrease at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

11. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the indication of a power event comprises a power level of a battery meets or exceeds a predetermined threshold and wherein the request to change a display property includes a request to increase at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

12. A computer-implemented method of determining an image display property comprising:

causing display of a user interface for choice of at least one or more power management schemes in response to a power event;

receiving an identification of a power event;

selecting a scheme from a plurality of power management schemes, wherein the selected scheme is responsive to the power event and based at least on the choice of at least one or more power management schemes;

changing an image display property in response to the power event and in accordance with the selected scheme, wherein the image display property is at least one of a color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate; and

providing an image for display in accordance with the image display property.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a change in a power source from AC power to DC power and wherein changing an image display property includes decreasing at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a change in a power source from DC power to AC power and wherein changing an image display property includes increasing at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a power level of a battery falling below a predetermined threshold and wherein changing an image display property includes decreasing at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 12 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a power level of a battery meeting or exceeding a predetermined threshold and wherein changing an image display property includes increasing at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

17. At least one tangible computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a computer, cause the computer to:

cause display of a user interface for choice of at least one or more power management schemes in response to a power event;

receive an identification of a power event;

select a scheme from a plurality of power management schemes, wherein the selected scheme is responsive at least to the power event and based at least on the choice of at least one or more power management schemes;

change an image display property in response to the power event and in accordance with the selected scheme, wherein the image display property is at least one of a color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate; and

provide an image for display in accordance with the image display property.

18. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a change in a power source from AC power to DC power and wherein change an image display property includes decrease of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

19. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a change in a power source from DC power to AC power and wherein change an image display property includes increase of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.

20. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the identification of a power event comprises a power level of a battery below a predetermined threshold and wherein change an image display property includes decrease of at least one of the color quality, screen resolution, and screen refresh rate.
