Abstract

An automatic content recognition (ACR)-enabled connected TV device may be operable to identify, utilizing an ACR system, content in a presented program. An event category related to the identified content may be identified by the ACR-enabled connected device utilizing the ACR system. The ACR-enabled connected device may determine, utilizing the ACR system, whether to present an overlay associated with the event category, based on a user profile associated with the ACR-enabled connected device. The overlay for viewer interaction may be presented, based on the determination, by the ACR-enabled connected device utilizing the ACR system. The user profile may comprise information on categories of events that may be preferred by the viewer. The user profile may be determined based on input from the viewer. The user profile may also be determined based on viewing history and/or behavior associated with the ACR-enabled connected device.

Claims (52)

1. A method, comprising:

in an automatic content recognition (ACR)-enabled connected TV device, wherein:

said ACR-enabled connected TV device comprises an ACR module that communicates with an ACR system that is external to said ACR-enabled connected TV device, and said ACR system comprises an abstraction layer that supports different video and audio fingerprint technologies from multiple vendors, wherein said abstraction layer enables said ACR system to assign same interactive event identifiers to different sets of video and audio fingerprints that are generated by said different video and audio fingerprint technologies from said multiple vendors based on timing of said assignment of said interactive event identifiers;

said ACR module providing fingerprints to said ACR system for matching;

said ACR module receiving information and/or content from said ACR system based on said matching; and

said ACR-enabled connected TV device is paired with or associated with a paired device utilizing a companion application running on said paired device:

identifying by said ACR module, utilizing an ACR system, content in a presented program associated with a network;

identifying by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, an event category related to said identified content;

determining by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, whether to present an overlay associated with said event category, based on a user profile associated with said ACR-enabled connected TV device; and

presenting by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, said overlay based on said determination, for viewer interaction, wherein said overlay is also presented on said paired device.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said user profile comprises information on categories of events that are preferred by said viewer.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a location of said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a time of day associated with said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a device type of said ACR-enabled connected TV device and/or said paired device.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein said device type comprises a television, a tablet, a laptop and/or a smartphone.

7. The method according to claim 2 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a type of programming.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said user profile is determined based on input from said viewer.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said user profile is determined based on viewing history and/or behavior associated with said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said viewer interacts with said presented overlay on said ACR-enabled connected TV device or on said paired device.

11. A system, comprising:

an automatic content recognition (ACR)-enabled connected TV device, wherein:

said ACR-enabled connected TV device comprises an ACR module that communicates with an ACR system that is external to said ACR-enabled connected TV device, and said ACR system comprises an abstraction layer that supports different video and audio fingerprint technologies from multiple vendors, wherein said abstraction layer enables said ACR system to assign same interactive event identifiers to different sets of video and audio fingerprints that are generated by said different video and audio fingerprint technologies from said multiple vendors based on timing of said assignment of said interactive event identifiers;

said ACR module providing fingerprints to said ACR system for matching;

said ACR module receiving information and/or content from said ACR system based on said matching; and

said ACR-enabled connected device being paired with or associated with a paired device utilizing a companion application running on said paired device, and said ACR-enabled connected TV device being operable to:

identify by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, content in a presented program associated with a network;

identify by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, an event category related to said identified content;

determine by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, whether to present an overlay associated with said event category, based on a user profile associated with said ACR-enabled connected device; and

present by said ACR module, utilizing said ACR system, said overlay based on said determination, for viewer interaction, wherein said overlay is also presented on said paired device.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said user profile comprises information on categories of events that are preferred by said viewer.

13. The system according to claim 12 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a location of said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

14. The system according to claim 12 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a time of day associated with said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

15. The system according to claim 12 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a device type of said ACR-enabled connected TV device and/or said paired device.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein said device type comprises a television, a tablet, a laptop and/or a smartphone.

17. The system according to claim 12 , wherein said preference in said user profile depends on a type of programming.

18. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said user profile is determined based on input from said viewer.

19. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said user profile is determined based on viewing history and/or behavior associated with said ACR-enabled connected TV device.

20. The system according to claim 11 , wherein said viewer interacts with said presented overlay on said ACR-enabled connected TV device or on said paired device.

21. A system, comprising:

an automatic content recognition (ACR) system comprising:

a fingerprint matching system;

a plurality real-time fingerprint servers;

wherein:

said finger print matching system is communicatively coupled to the said plurality of real-time fingerprint servers; and

said ACR system comprises an abstraction layer that interfaces with the said plurality real-time fingerprint servers to support different video and audio fingerprint technologies from multiple vendors, wherein said abstraction layer enables the ACR system to assign same interactive event identifiers to different sets of video and audio fingerprints that are generated by said different video and audio fingerprint technologies from said multiple vendors based on timing of said assignment of said interactive event identifiers; and

an ACR-enabled connected TV device comprising an ACR module, wherein said ACR-enabled connected TV device is communicatively coupled to said ACR system;

said ACR-enabled connected TV device is paired with or associated with a paired device utilizing a companion application running on said paired device;
