Abstract

There is provided in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention an optical assembly including a set of optical paths, wherein two or more optical paths receive an image from a common surface. The optical paths may direct received images onto a common image sensor generating a complex multidimensional data set, an image processing block may extrapolate each of the subset of optical paths printed on the image sensor and may generate a multidimensional data set based on the collected images.

Claims (13)

1. An apparatus for acquiring image data sets of a given scene via two or more optical paths, said apparatus comprising:

a single image sensor array including an array of light sensing elements; and

at least first and second optical paths configured to interleavingly direct light from the given scene, received via different optical paths, onto said single image sensor array concurrently, such that image information from said first optical path and said second optical path is concurrently directed onto interleaving light sensing elements of said array of light sensing elements of said single image sensor array, such that: (1) each given light sensing element of at least a majority of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said first optical path is situated such that one or more of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said second optical path are situated to each of four sides of the given light sensing element; and (2) each individual light sensing element of at least a majority of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said second optical path is situated such that one or more of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said first optical path are situated to each of four sides of the individual light sensing element.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an image extrapolation block for deriving, from the image information received from said at least first and second optical paths, image data sets representing the given scene from single optical paths.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the single optical paths include optical paths other than said at least first and second optical paths directing light from the given scene.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each of said at least first and second optical paths comprises a distinct optical element.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein said distinct element is a distinct filter.

6. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein said distinct element is a distinct grid.

7. A method for acquiring image data sets of a given scene, said method comprising:

interleavingly directing light, via first and second optical paths, concurrently, from the given scene, onto a single image sensor array including an array of light sensing elements such that image information from said first optical path and said second optical path;

is concurrently directed onto interleaving light sensing elements of said array of light sensing elements of said single image sensor array, such that: (1) each given light sensing element of at least a majority of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said first optical path is situated such that one or more of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said second optical path are situated to each of four sides of the given light sensing element; and (2) each individual light sensing element of at least a majority of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said second optical path is situated such that one or more of said light sensing elements sensing image information received via said first optical path are situated to each of four sides of the individual light sensing element.

8. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising using processing circuitry to derive, from the image information received via said first and second optical paths, image data sets representing the given scene from single optical paths.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the single optical paths include optical paths other than said first and second optical paths.
