Abstract

Disclosed are implantable medical devices for the occlusion of a bodily lumen, cavity, vessel, or organ, as well as methods for manufacturing such occlusion devices, and methods for treating a subject using the occlusion devices. The devices generally include a wire having shape memory properties and a flexible membranous material disposed about the wire. Some embodiments include a lateral fringe on the membranous material. Some embodiments include a fluid capture cup affixed to the wire.

Claims (33)

1. An implantable occlusion device comprising:

a wire having a longitudinal length and shape memory properties, and adapted to be reconfigured from a pre-deployed state to a deployed state wherein the wire recoils longitudinally and expands radially within a lumen in a bodily tissue to define an interior region, and

a flexible polymer sheet that is disposed around the wire such that the flexible polymer sheet defines a longitudinal fold, the sheet defining a wire sleeve portion extending along the fold, and an excess portion extending along the wire sleeve portion, the wire extending longitudinally within the wire sleeve portion, wherein the excess portion includes an external fringe, the external fringe including a first, uncut portion of the sheet disposed adjacent the wire and extending continuously along at least a portion of a longitudinal length of the wire and a second cut portion extending from the uncut portion away from the wire, the cut portion defining a plurality of individual fringes separated from an adjacent one of the plurality of individual fringes by a cut line, the cut lines of the plurality of individual fringes extending from the wire to a free edge of the second cut portion, and the external fringe extending along at least a portion of a length of the sheet such that the external fringe is adapted to project from the recoiled wire to fill the interior region to promote occlusion of the lumen in the bodily tissue.

2. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the external fringe comprises an incised portion of the sheet.

3. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the fringe is non-integral to the sheet.

4. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the fringe extends substantially an entire length of the wire.

5. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the sheet is attached to the wire at one or more locations on the wire.

6. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the sheet comprises ePTFE.

7. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , further comprising an endothelization promoting agent, anti-inflammatory agent, or a healing agent.

8. The implantable occlusion device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more radiopaque markers.

9. An implantable occlusion device comprising:

a wire having shape memory properties and adapted to be reconfigured from a pre-deployed state to a deployed state wherein the wire recoils longitudinally and expands radially within a lumen in a bodily tissue to define an interior region, and

a flexible polymer tube that is disposed around the wire such that the flexible polymer tube defines a longitudinal fold, the lube defining a wire sleeve portion extending along the fold, and an excess portion extending along the wire sleeve portion, the wire extending longitudinally within the wire sleeve portion,

wherein the excess portion includes an external fringe, the external fringe including a first, uncut portion of the tube disposed adjacent the wire and extending continuously along at least a portion of a longitudinal length of the wire and a second cut portion extending from the uncut portion away from the wire, the cut portion defining a plurality of individual fringes separated from an adjacent one of the plurality of individual fringes by a cut line, the cut lines of the plurality of individual fringes extending from the wire to a free edge of the second cut portion, and the external fringe extending along at least a portion of a length of the tube such that the external fringe is adapted to project from the recoiled wire to fill the interior region to promote occlusion of the lumen in the bodily tissue.

10. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the wire is located inside a lumen of the tube.

11. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the tube comprises a polymer strip that is wrapped around at least a portion of the wire.

12. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the external fringe comprises an incised portion of the tube.

13. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the fringe is non-integral to the tube.

14. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the fringe extends substantially an entire length of the wire.

15. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the fringe has a length that extends beyond a length of the wire.

16. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the tube is attached to the wire at one or more locations on the wire.

17. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , wherein the tube comprises ePTFE.

18. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , further comprising an endothelization promoting agent, anti-inflammatory agent, or a healing agent.

19. The implantable occlusion device of claim 9 , further comprising one or more radiopaque markers.

20. A device for limiting fluid flow through a lumen in a bodily tissue, comprising:

a frame including at least one wire and defining a proximal portion that is open and a distal portion, the frame being adapted to be reconfigured during deployment into the lumen from a pre-deployed state to a deployed state, the deployed state including the proximal portion expanding outwardly to define an inner lumen and the distal portion bunching together longitudinally and expanding outwardly within the lumen in the bodily tissue to define an interior region;

a flexible polymeric material disposed about the distal portion of the frame such that the flexible polymeric material defines a longitudinal fold, the flexible polymeric material defining a wire sleeve portion extending along the fold, and an excess portion extending along the wire sleeve portion, the distal portion of the frame extending longitudinally within the wire sleeve portion, the excess portion including an external fringe that is adapted to project from the bunched distal portion of the wire to fill the interior region and promote occlusion of the lumen in the bodily tissue; and

a flexible polymeric cup, wherein the flexible polymeric cup includes an open end affixed to the proximal portion of the frame, wherein the flexible polymeric cup is adapted to be reconfigured during deployment into the lumen from a pre-deployed state to an everted state in which the polymeric cup is extends distally within the inner lumen of the proximal portion of the frame, and wherein the flexible polymeric cup in the everted state is adapted to limit fluid flow through the lumen.

21. The device of claim 20 , wherein the flexible polymeric cup is formed from a sheet of polymeric material.

22. The device of claim 20 , wherein the flexible polymeric cup is formed from a tube of polymeric material.

23. The device of claim 20 , wherein the flexible polymeric cup comprises ePTFE.

24. The device of claim 20 , further comprising one or more radiopaque markers.

25. The device of claim 20 , wherein the frame defines a wire-framed cylinder having a first open end and a second open end.
