Abstract

Provided herein include methods and compositions pertaining to coatings, such as paints, for covering a substrate. In some aspects and embodiments the coatings may include a heat reflective metal oxide pigment that, applied to an external surface of a building (or is applied on a substrate used for an external surface of a building such as an architectural metal panel, EIFS or as a stucco top coat) reduces the energy consumption in the building. In other aspects and embodiments, provided are textured coatings having a texturing material; for example, methods and compositions are provided pertaining to textured coatings that can be applied robotically or in an automated fashion. In various aspects and embodiments, textured coatings are provided that include a texturing material and a heat reflective metal oxide pigment. In some aspects and embodiments coatings that include pumice texturing materials (for example pumice having particle sizes of greater than 150 microns) are provided.

Claims (25)

1 . A marine coating comprising:

(1) a first layer comprising (a) one or more selected from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and fluoroethylene-alkyl vinyl ether (FEVE)) and (b) a heat reflective pigment; and

(2) a second polyurethane layer.

2 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein the coating is on a metal substrate.

3 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein the coating is on a metal substrate that is present on a boat.

4 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein the coating further comprises a metal primer layer and an acrylic/latex resin layer.

5 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein said heat reflective metal oxide pigment comprises one or more pigments selected from the group consisting of a pigment having a corundum-hematite crystal lattice structure, a pigment having a spinel crystal lattice structure and a pigment having a nickel titanate rutile structure.

6 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein said heat reflective metal oxide pigment comprises an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, antimony, bismuth, boron, chrome, cobalt, gallium, indium, iron, lanthanum, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, neodymium, nickel, niobium, silium, tin, vanadium, and zinc.

7 . The marine coating of claim 1 , wherein said polyurethane layer is a two component polyurethane coating layer.

8 . A non-slip coating comprising:

(1) a first layer that comprises a texturing material; and

(2) a second polyurethane layer;

wherein one or more of said first and second layers comprise a heat reflective metal oxide pigment.

9 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said texturing material containing layer comprises a heat reflective metal oxide pigment.

10 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein the coating is on a walking surface substrate.

11 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein the coating is on a walking surface substrate on a boat.

12 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein the coating further comprises an acrylic/latex resin layer.

13 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said heat reflective metal oxide pigment comprises one or more pigments selected from the group consisting of a pigment having a corundum-hematite crystal lattice structure, a pigment having a spinel crystal lattice structure and a pigment having a nickel titanate rutile structure.

14 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said heat reflective metal oxide pigment comprises an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, antimony, bismuth, boron, chrome, cobalt, gallium, indium, iron, lanthanum, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, neodymium, nickel, niobium, silium, tin, vanadium, and zinc.

15 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said polyurethane layer is a two component polyurethane coating layer.

16 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said polyurethane layer is a two component polyurethane coating layer.

17 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said texturing material comprises particles of at least about 200 microns.

18 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said texturing material comprises particles of at least about 500 microns.

19 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said texturing material comprises particles of at least about 1,500 microns.

20 . The non-slip coating of claim 8 , wherein said texturing material comprises particles of at least about 2,000 microns.
