Abstract

Techniques for utilization of antenna loading for impedance matching are described. In at least some embodiments, a device (e.g., a smart phone) includes multiple antennas that are employed to send and receive wireless signals for the device. The device further includes impedance matching functionality communicatively connected to the antennas, and configured to perform impedance matching for one of the antennas based on loading (e.g., dielectric loading) of another of the antennas.

Claims (29)

1. A device comprising:

at least one of a radio transmitter or a radio receiver;

a first antenna and a second antenna communicatively connected to at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver; and

a matching functionality communicatively connected to the first antenna, the second antenna, and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver, and configured to utilize a loaded impedance of the first antenna to perform impedance matching between the second antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver.

2. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a smart phone, and wherein the first antenna and the second antenna are respectively attached at opposite ends of a printed circuit board (PCB) mounted internally to the smart phone.

3. The device as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a different matching functionality configured to utilize a loaded impedance of the second antenna to perform impedance matching between the first antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver.

4. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first antenna is attached at a position on the device such that the loaded impedance of the first antenna is caused by proximity to a portion of a user's body during use of the device.

5. The device as recited in claim 4 , further comprising a different matching functionality configured to utilize a loaded impedance of the second antenna to perform impedance matching between the first antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver, and wherein the second antenna is attached at a different position on the device such that the loaded impedance of the second antenna is caused by proximity to a different portion of the user's body during user of the device.

6. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first antenna and the second antenna are each configured to transmit and receive signals at the same frequency.

7. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the matching functionality is configured to utilize power reflection caused by the loaded impedance of the first antenna to perform said impedance matching.

8. The device as recited in claim 1 , wherein said impedance matching increases a signal-to-noise ratio for signal transmission by the second antenna.

9. A device comprising:

a circuit support structure including at least one of a radio transmitter or a radio receiver attached thereto;

a first antenna attached at a first end of the circuit support structure and communicatively connected to at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver, and a second antenna attached at a second end of the circuit support structure and communicatively connected to at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver; and

at least one impedance matching module mounted on the circuit support structure and communicatively connected to the first antenna and the second antenna, and configured to utilize impedance loading of the first antenna to perform impedance matching between the second antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver.

10. The device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the device comprises a smart phone, and wherein the circuit support structure comprises a printed circuit board (PCB) mounted internally to the smart phone.

11. The device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the circuit support structure is positioned in the device such that the impedance loading of the first antenna is caused by proximity to a portion of a user's body during use of the device.

12. The device as recited in claim 9 , further comprising at least one other matching module mounted on the circuit support structure and communicatively connected to the first antenna and the second antenna, and configured to utilize impedance loading of the second antenna to perform impedance matching between the first antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver.

13. The device as recited in claim 12 , wherein the circuit support structure is positioned in the device such that the impedance loading of the first antenna is caused by proximity to a portion of a user's body during use of the device, and such that the impedance loading of the second antenna is caused by proximity to a different portion of the user's body during use of the device.

14. The device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the at least one impedance matching functionality is configured to utilize power reflection caused by the impedance loading of the first antenna to perform said impedance matching.

15. The device as recited in claim 9 , wherein said impedance matching increases a signal transmission strength of the second antenna.

16. A portable handheld device comprising:

at least one of a radio transmitter or a radio receiver;

a first antenna and a second antenna communicatively connected to at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver; and

a matching functionality communicatively connected to the first antenna, the second antenna, and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver, and configured to utilize power reflection caused by a loaded impedance of the first antenna to perform impedance matching between the second antenna and at least one of the radio transmitter or the radio receiver.

17. The portable handheld device as recited in claim 16 , wherein the portable handheld device comprises a phone, and wherein the first antenna and the second antenna are respectively attached at opposite ends of a printed circuit board (PCB) mounted internally to the phone.

18. The portable handheld device as recited in claim 16 , wherein the matching functionality is configured to perform the impedance matching in response to receiving an indication of the power reflection.

19. The portable handheld device as recited in claim 16 , wherein the matching functionality is configured to perform the impedance matching in response to receiving an indication of an impedance loading of the first antenna.

20. The portable handheld device as recited in claim 16 , wherein said impedance matching tunes the second antenna to a specific frequency.
