Abstract

A device for clearing obstructions from a medical tube, such as a chest tube, is disclosed in various embodiments. The device features a clearance member in the form of a loop. The loop desirably has a diameter that substantially corresponds to the inner diameter of the medical tube. Also desirably, the loop presents a substantially unobstructed pathway therethrough for the flow of material from a location in the medical tube distal to the loop to a location in the medical tube proximal to the loop regardless whether the clearance member is being translated or is at rest in the medical tube. Methods of utilizing such a device are also disclosed.

Claims (30)

1. A method of clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising coupling a guide tube in fluid communication with a medical tube thereby defining a common passageway through the respective tubes comprising a sterile field, wherein an elongate guide member is entirely disposed within said common passageway, and actuating said guide member without compromising the sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, wherein said clearance member presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

2. The method of claim 1 , said guide member being actuated from outside said sterile field.

3. The method of claim 1 , said guide member being actuated from outside said sterile field through a wall of said guide tube.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a shuttle is coupled to said guide member, said shuttle being actuated from outside said sterile field to correspondingly actuate said guide member and thereby translate said clearance member in the medical tube.

5. The method of claim 1 , said guide member being actuated via a shuttle that is translated axially relative to a longitudinal axis of said guide member.

6. The method of claim 1 , said guide member comprising a guide wire.

7. The method of claim 6 , said clearance member comprising a wire loop formed from or attached to a terminal portion of said guide wire.

The method of claim 1 , said clearance member being normally disposed in said medical tube at a resting position adjacent the medical tube's distal end, wherein to clear said medical tube of obstructions said clearance member is initially withdrawn in a proximal direction from its resting position to engage and draw debris proximally, away from said medical tube distal end.

9. The method of claim 8 , said guide member and clearance member being configured so that said clearance member does not emerge from the distal end of said medical tube either in its resting position or during actuation thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising withdrawing debris from said medical tube through said guide tube, past said guide member along its full length.

A method of clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising providing a passageway comprising a sterile field that is at least partially defined within a medical tube, wherein an elongate guide member extends in said passageway, actuating said guide member from outside said medical tube without compromising the sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, and withdrawing debris from said medical tube through and out of said passageway past a full extent of said guide member that is located in said passageway, wherein said clearance member presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

The method of claim 11 , said clearance member being normally disposed in said medical tube at a resting position adjacent the medical tube's distal end, wherein to clear said medical tube of obstructions said clearance member is initially withdrawn in a proximal direction from its resting position to engage and draw debris proximally, away from said medical tube's distal end.

13. The method of claim 11 , said guide member and clearance member being configured so that said clearance member does not emerge from a distal end of said medical tube either in a resting position or during actuation thereof.

14. The method of claim 11 , said guide member being coupled to a shuttle, the method further comprising actuating said shuttle from outside said sterile field to correspondingly actuate said guide member and thereby translate said clearance member within the sterile field.

A method of clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising providing a medical tube that at least partially defines an unbranched passageway comprising a sterile field, wherein an elongate guide member extends in said unbranched passageway, actuating said guide member without compromising the sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, and withdrawing debris from said medical tube through said unbranched passageway, wherein said clearance member presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

16. The method of claim 15 , said guide member being actuated from outside said sterile field.

A device for clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising a medical tube that at least partially defines a passageway comprising a sterile field for the passage of patient secretions from said medical tube out a proximal end of said passageway, and an elongate guide member disposed entirely within and extending in said passageway, said guide member being actuable from outside said medical tube without compromising said sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, said clearance member being configured such that it presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

18. The device of claim 17 , further comprising a guide tube coupled with said medical tube thereby defining said passageway through the respective tubes.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein a shuttle is coupled to said guide member, said shuttle being actuable from outside said sterile field to correspondingly actuate said guide member and thereby translate said clearance member in said medical tube.

20. The device of claim 17 , said passageway being an unbranched passageway.

21. A device for clearing obstructions from a medical tube, the device comprising a medical tube, a clearance member in the form of a loop adapted to be translated through said medical tube via a guide wire to dislodge debris accumulated therein, said loop lying in a plane at a predetermined angle relative to a longitudinal axis of said guide wire, wherein said loop presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being translated or is at rest within said medical tube.

22. The device of claim 21 , wherein said corresponding translation of said clearance member is induced via a magnetic coupling through a wall of said guide tube.

23. The device of claim 21 , said loop having a diameter that substantially corresponds to an inner diameter of said medical tube.

A method of clearing obstructions from a medical tube, comprising providing a medical tube that at least partially defines a sterile field, wherein a guide member is entirely disposed within said sterile field, and actuating said guide member without compromising the sterile field to correspondingly actuate a clearance member attached to or formed with said guide member in said medical tube, wherein said clearance member presents a substantially unobstructed pathway for the flow of material from a location in said medical tube distal to said clearance member to a location in said medical tube proximal to said clearance member regardless whether said clearance member is being actuated or is at rest within said medical tube.

25. The method of claim 24 , said guide member being actuated from outside said sterile field.

26. The method of claim 24 , said guide member comprising a guide wire.

27. The method of claim 26 , said clearance member comprising a wire loop formed from or attached to a terminal portion of said guide wire.

The method of claim 24 , said clearance member being normally disposed in said medical tube at a resting position adjacent the medical tube's distal end, wherein to clear said medical tube of obstructions said clearance member is initially withdrawn in a proximal direction from its resting position to engage and draw debris proximally, away from said medical tube distal end.

29. The method of claim 28 , said guide member and clearance member being configured so that said clearance member does not emerge from the distal end of said medical tube either in its resting position or during actuation thereof.

30. The method of claim 24 , further comprising withdrawing debris from said medical tube through said guide tube, past said guide member along its full length.
