Abstract

A network device receives probe packets communicated by a user equipment device. The network device communicates response packets back to the user equipment device, including timestamps, and/or other information. The user equipment device may be configured to test the performance of different portions of a wireless network (i.e., determine an available bandwidth measurement throughput (ABMT) of the wireless network) by accessing different network devices (or information associated with different network devices).

Claims (53)

1. A method for tuning packet trains in a wireless network, the method comprising:

transmitting a first packet train through a radio access network, from a first user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with a first carrier;

transmitting a second packet train, through said radio access network, from a second user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with a second carrier, wherein the second carrier is different than the first carrier and the first and second carriers share said radio access network;

controlling, via a central server, said transmitting from the first user equipment device and the second user equipment device;

tuning the first packet train to a first radio bearer configuration of the first carrier; and

tuning the second packet train to a second radio bearer configuration of the second carrier,

wherein the first packet train and the second packet train are tuned to account for changes in a radio environment.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein tuning the first packet train further comprises:

tuning a number of packets in the first packet train.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein tuning the first packet train further comprises:

tuning a number of bytes per packet in the first packet train.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein tuning the second packet train further comprises:

tuning a number of packets in the second packet train.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein tuning the second packet train further comprises:

tuning a number of bytes per packet in the second packet train.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein a plurality of first packet trains are transmitted, each first packet train comprising a predefined pattern of packets, the predefined pattern of packets for at least one first packet train differing from the predefined pattern of packets for at least one other first packet train; and

the method further comprises:

identifying at least one of the first packet trains in each protocol layer of the protocol stack based on that particular first packet train's predefined pattern of packets.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein either:

at least two of the first packet trains have predefined patterns that differ from one another in either the number of packets, or the size of each packet.

8. A system for tuning packet trains in a wireless network, the system comprising:

one or more processors configured to:

transmit a first packet train through a radio access network, from a first user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with a first carrier;

transmit a second packet train through said radio access network, from a second user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with a second carrier, wherein the second carrier is different than the first carrier and the first and second carriers share said radio access network;

control, via a central server, said transmitting from the first user equipment device and the second user equipment device;

tune the first packet train to a first radio bearer configuration of the first carrier; and

tune the second packet train to a second radio bearer configuration of the second carrier,

wherein the first packet train and the second packet train are tuned to account for changes in a radio environment.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors configured to tune the first packet train are further configured to:

tune a number of packets and/or tune a number of bytes per packet, in the first packet train.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors configured to tune the second packet train are further configured to:

tune a number of packets and/or tune a number of bytes per packet, in the second packet train.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more processors configured to tune the second packet train are configured to:

transmit a plurality of first packet trains, each first packet train comprising a predefined pattern of packets, the predefined pattern of packets for at least one first packet train differing from the predefined pattern of packets for at least one other first packet train;

identify at least one of the first packet trains in each protocol layer of the protocol stack based on that particular first packet train's predefined pattern of packets.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors configured to tune the second packet train are configured to:

transmit at least two of the first packet trains with predefined patterns that differ from one another in either the number of packets, or the size of each packet.

13. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having one or more computer-readable instructions thereon which when executed by one or more processors cause the one or more processors to:

transmit a first packet train through a radio access network, from a first user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with a first carrier;

transmit a second packet train through said radio access network, from a second user equipment device to a network device belonging to a backbone data network associated with second carrier, wherein the second carrier is different than the first carrier and the first and second carriers share said radio access network;

control, via a central server, said transmitting from the first user equipment device and the second user equipment device;

tune the first packet train to a first radio bearer configuration of the first carrier; and

tune the second packet train to a second radio bearer configuration of the second carrier,

wherein the first packet train and the second packet train are tuned to account for changes in a radio environment.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions causing the one or more processors to tune the first packet train are further configured to:

tune a number of packets and/or tune a number of bytes per packet, in the first packet train.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions causing the one or more processors to tune the second packet train are further configured to:

tune a number of packets and/or tune a number of bytes per packet, in the second packet train.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions causing the one or more processors to tune the second packet train are further configured to:

transmit a plurality of first packet trains, each first packet train comprising a predefined pattern of packets, the predefined pattern of packets for at least one first packet train differing from the predefined pattern of packets for at least one other first packet train;

identify at least one of the first packet trains in each protocol layer of the protocol stack based on that particular first packet train's predefined pattern of packets.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the instructions causing the one or more processors to tune the second packet train are further configured to:

transmit at least two of the first packet trains with predefined patterns that differ from one another in either the number of packets, or the size of each packet.
