Calcium carbonate granulation
Highly compactable granulations and methods for preparing highly compactable granulations are disclosed. More particularly, highly compactable calcium carbonate granulations are disclosed. The granulations comprise powdered materials such as calcium carbonate that have small median particle sizes. The disclosed granulations are useful in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical tableting and provide smaller tablet sizes upon compression than previously available.
1. A highly compactable, high density granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting consisting essentially of calcium carbonate powder and about 5% by weight maltodextrin; said calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter of about 20 μm; said granulation being highly compactable, having a tap density between 1.0 and 2.0 g/cm 3 and having sufficient cohesive properties for compression into tablets.
2. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.
3. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between 1.1 and 2.0 g/cm 3 .
4. The granulation of claim 1 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.
5. A highly compactable, high density granulation for pharmaceutical or nutraceutical tabletting consisting essentially of calcium carbonate powder and about 5% by weight maltodextrin; said calcium carbonate powder having a median particle diameter of about 20 μm; said granulation having a tap density between 1.0 and 2.0 g/cm 3 and being highly compactable for compression into tablets.
6. The granulation of claim 5 , wherein said maltodextrin has a dextrose equivalent (DE) of 10.
7. The granulation of claim 5 , wherein the tap density of the granulation is between 1.1 and 2.0 g/cm 3 .
8. The granulation of claim 5 , wherein said granulation comprises at least about 93% said calcium carbonate powder by weight.
