Abstract

A device, system and method for administering radiation therapy to a tissue surface of a patient utilizes an applicator capable of controlled movement and repositioning over a selected area of tissue, under the control of a computer or controller. A servo-controlled manipulator can effect a raster scan of the desired area, such as an area of the skin, and this can be in any desired pattern such as serpentine, spiral, parallel but unidirectional, or irregular patterns. Preferably a third direction of control is included, i.e. a depth direction, with an appropriate form of depth sensor, a signal from which can be used to adjust the radiation source so that radiation of the tissue surface is consistent over varied contoured.

Claims (34)

1. A system for treating a surface of living tissue of a patient, comprising:

an applicator for irradiating the tissue surface, the applicator including a source for emitting a beam of ionizing radiation;

a manipulator for translating the beam from the source over a selected area of tissue so as to direct radiation as desired over the area to be treated;

a controller programmed with a treatment plan for controlling the manipulator;

a frame controlled from said manipulator and for supporting the applicator at a desired position;

wherein the manipulator, as controlled from the controller, controls the translation of the beam of ionization radiation from the source that is mounted to the applicator so as to scan the beam of ionization radiation over the area to be treated.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manipulator is controlled, under control of the controller, for moving the source in a Z or depth direction during scanning, and in accordance with a measurement of depth from the applicator.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the applicator includes a contacting probe.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the contacting probe includes a source catheter and a catheter sheath for receiving the source catheter.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the distal end of the catheter sheath is rounded.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the manipulator includes at least an X slide, and the catheter sheath has a sliding fit passing through the X slide.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manipulator is controlled, under control of the controller, for moving the source in a Z or depth direction.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the depth control is by means of a linear variable differential transformer.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the depth control is by means of a infra-red ranging system.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the depth control is by means of a generally spherical applicator tip surrounding the source.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the generally spherical tip comprises a solid body having the source centered therein.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the generally spherical tip has different beam attenuating characteristics in different directions from the source, providing a non-uniform distribution of radiation for different directions as scanning proceeds.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the generally spherical tip has a radius of about 0.5 to 2 cm.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the scanning of the beam includes X-Y control of beam position within a plane by means of the manipulator, and further includes Z or depth control.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manipulator controls an end member holding the source so as to tilt from vertical and as to rotation about a vertical axis, thus including directing the beam obliquely toward the surface during scanning.

16. A device for treating a surface of living tissue of a patient, comprising:

an applicator for irradiating the tissue surface, the applicator including a source for emitting a beam of ionizing radiation;

a manipulator for translating the beam from the source over a selected area of tissue;

said applicator comprising a contacting probe including a source catheter and a catheter sheath for receiving the source catheter;

wherein the manipulator includes at least an X slide, and the catheter sheath has a sliding fit passing through the X slide.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the distal end of the catheter sheath is rounded.

18. A device for treating a surface of living tissue of a patient, comprising:

an applicator for irradiating the tissue surface, the applicator including a source for emitting a beam of ionizing radiation;

a manipulator for translating the beam from the source over a selected area of tissue;

said applicator including a source catheter and a catheter sheath for receiving the source catheter;

the catheter sheath having a generally spherical tip and the source catheter carrying the source at a distal end thereof.

19. The device of claim 18 wherein the catheter sheath tip is solid, and the source is disposed centered in the generally spherical tip.

20. The device of claim 19 including a filtering layer disposed on an outer surface of the spherical tip, and wherein the spherical tip provides a minimal contact point with an air gap on either side thereof.

21. The system of claim 11 wherein the generally spherical tip has different beam attenuating characteristics in different directions from the source.
