Abstract

Granular crystals with one or more chains of particles are described. A geometry of at least one particle is chosen to provide highly nonlinear pulses having selected characteristics. Contact interactions between the particles are non-Hertzian.

Claims (16)

1. A granular crystal comprising:

one or more granular chain of particles, wherein a geometry of at least one particle in one or more chain of particles is chosen to provide highly nonlinear mechanical or acoustical pulses having selected characteristics,

wherein contact interactions between particles in the one or more granular chain of particles are non-Hertzian at all displacements of particles in the one or more granular chain of particles.

2. A granular crystal comprising:

a periodic distribution of granular particles, wherein the distribution is chosen to form acoustic band gaps in selected frequency ranges, wherein the acoustic band gaps depend upon one or more mass ratios of the granular particles.

3. A granular crystal comprising:

a periodic distribution of granular particles, wherein the distribution is chosen to form acoustic band gaps in selected frequency ranges, wherein precompression is applied to the granular particles and wherein the acoustic band gaps depend upon one or more mass ratios of the granular particles and one or more levels of the precompression.

4. A granular crystal comprising:

one or more granular chains of particles, wherein a geometry of at least one particle in one or more chains of particles is chosen to provide highly nonlinear mechanical or acoustical pulses having selected characteristics and wherein contact interactions between particles in the one or more granular chains of particles are non-Hertzian, wherein the selected characteristics of the pulses comprise an acoustic bandgap for the granular crystal and wherein the acoustic band gap depends upon one or more mass ratios of the granular particles.

5. A granular crystal comprising:

one or more granular chains of particles, wherein a geometry of at least one particle in one or more chains of particles is chosen to provide highly nonlinear mechanical or acoustical pulses having selected characteristics and wherein contact interactions between particles in the one or more granular chains of particles are non-Hertzian, further comprising apparatus applying precompression to at least one granular chains of particles and wherein the selected characteristics of the pulses comprise an acoustic bandgap for the granular crystal and wherein the acoustic band gap depends upon one or more mass ratios of the granular particles and one or more levels of the precompression.

6. The granular crystal according to claim 4 , wherein the granular crystal comprises a one dimensional crystal and the one or more granular chains of particles comprises a single granular chain of particles.

7. The granular crystal according to claim 4 , wherein the one or more granular chains of particles are arranged into a three dimensional structure.

8. The granular crystal according to claim 4 , wherein the selected characteristics include one or more of the following characteristics: energy trapping characteristics; impulse redirection; and localization.

9. The granular crystal according to claim 2 , wherein the periodic distribution of granular particles comprises layers of granular particles.

10. The granular crystal according to claim 2 , wherein the granular particles comprise spherical particles, non-spherical particles, or some combination thereof.
