Abstract

A method of controlling a vehicle braking system, includes: (i) detecting whether a collision has occurred; (ii) detecting whether a predetermined condition follows the collision; (iii) determining whether a driver has applied the brakes; and (iv) when a driver has not applied the brakes, autonomously initiating braking.

Claims (30)

1. A device for autonomously braking a motor vehicle following a collision, comprising:

a controller having a braking algorithm; and a detection unit configured to detect a predetermined movement of the motor vehicle and detect the collision;

wherein the braking algorithm is configured to:

command vehicle brakes to precharge in response to the detected collision;

command the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque based on a driver braking request in response to the detected collision and an anticipated application of a driver-actuated brake pedal; and

command the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque in the absence of a driver braking request in response to the detected collision and no anticipated application of the brake pedal.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensing means for detecting collision;

wherein the sensing means produces a collision signal.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the sensing means detects a collision in response to an airbag activation, a fuel supply shutting down, or a motion sensor reading exceeding a predefined threshold.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the algorithm is further configured to command the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque in response to an application and subsequent release of the brake pedal while a motion sensor reading exceeds an associated threshold.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the algorithm is further configured to release the vehicle brakes in response to a termination condition being satisfied.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the termination condition is a driver actuation of the gas pedal, a predefined time interval elapsing after the detected collision, or a motion sensor reading falling below a predefined threshold.

7. A method of controlling a vehicle comprising:

in response to a detected collision, pre-charging vehicle brakes;

in response to an anticipated application of a driver-actuated brake pedal after the collision, commanding the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque based on a driver braking request; and

in response to no anticipated application of the brake pedal after the collision, commanding the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque in the absence of application of the brake pedal.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the collision is detected based on an airbag activation, a fuel supply shutting down, or a motion sensor reading exceeding a predefined threshold.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising, in response to an application and subsequent release of the brake pedal while a motion sensor reading exceeds a predefined threshold, activating the vehicle brakes in the absence of application of the brake pedal.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising, in response to the vehicle brakes being active in the absence of application of the brake pedal and a termination criterion being satisfied, releasing the vehicle brakes.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the termination criterion is a driver actuation of the gas pedal.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the termination criterion is a predefined time interval elapsing after the detected collision.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the termination criterion is a motion sensor reading falling below a predefined threshold.

14. The method of claim 7 , wherein activating the vehicle brakes in the absence of application of the brake pedal includes applying the vehicle rates at a rate based on a calculated collision severity, the collision severity being calculated based on a reading from a motion sensor.

15. A method of controlling a vehicle comprising:

in response to a detected vehicle collision, pre-charging the vehicle brakes;

in response to the detected vehicle collision and an anticipated driver actuation of a brake pedal, commanding vehicle brakes to provide braking torque based on a driver braking request; and

in response to the detected collision and a driver actuation and subsequent release of a brake pedal prior to a termination criterion being satisfied, commanding the vehicle brakes to provide braking torque.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the termination criterion is a motion sensor reading falling below a predefined threshold.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the collision is detected based on an airbag activation, a fuel supply shutting down, or a motion sensor reading exceeding a predefined threshold.
