Abstract

Disclosed herein is a surgical mesh with a layer of dehydrated basement membrane formed thereon. Methods of making and using the mesh also are disclosed.

Claims (19)

1 . A surgical mesh with a layer of dehydrated basement membrane formed thereon.

2 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the basement membrane is dehydrated when in the form of a gel at room temperature.

3 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the basement membrane is dehydrated at a temperature in the range of 1-4 Dec. C after being placed on the sensor tip when the basement membrane is in the form of a liquid.

4 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the basement membrane is dehydrated at a temperature in the range of 10-30 Dec. C.

5 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the basement membrane is applied in multiple layers, and the basement membrane is dehydrated after application of each layer.

6 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the mesh also comprises layers of other extracellular matrices formed thereon.

7 . The surgical mesh of claim 1 , wherein the basement membrane contains cells and/or factors.

8 . The surgical mesh of claim 7 , wherein the cells and/or factors are crosslinked to the basement membrane with fibronectin.

9 . A kit comprising the surgical mesh of claim 1 enclosed in sterile packaging.

10 . A method comprising:

obtaining an implantable device comprising a surgical mesh,

placing basement membrane in the form of a liquid or gel on the implantable device to form at least one of a sleeve and a collar on the device, and

dehydrating the basement membrane on the implantable device.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

inserting the sensor in a biological tissue, and

rehydrating the basement membrane after insertion.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the basement membrane contains adenovirus vectors containing a VEGF gene.

13 . A method of making the implantable device of claim 1 .

14 . A method of promoting the biocompatibility of a surgical mesh with biological tissue, comprising forming an extracellular matrix coating around a surgical mesh, the coating comprising dehydrated extracellular matrix which is rehydrated after implantation, the extracellular matrix having cells and/or factors attached thereto using fibronectin.
