Abstract

Providing a request is disclosed. A first distance indication indicating a physical distance between the first mobile device and a reference location is received from a first mobile device. It is determined that the first distance indication meets a threshold criteria relative to a second distance indication of a second mobile device. A request for payment is provided to the first mobile device based at least in on part on the determination that the first distance indication meets the threshold criteria.

Claims (30)

1 . A system for providing a request, comprising:

a communication interface configured to receive from a first mobile device a first distance indication indicating a physical distance between the first mobile device and a reference location; and

a processor coupled with the communication interface and configured to

determine that the first distance indication meets a threshold criteria relative to a second distance indication of a second mobile device, and

provide a request for payment to the first mobile device based at least in on part on the determination that the first distance indication meets the threshold criteria.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication is associated with a measured intensity of a ultrasonic signal.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication includes a Root Mean Square amplitude of a band pass filtered signal.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication is received periodically from the first mobile device.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication was provided by the first mobile device because the first distance indication was greater than a threshold difference from a previously provided distance indication from the first mobile device.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication includes an average value of a plurality of distance indication values.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first distance indication was provided by the first mobile device in response to determining that the first mobile device did not detect a threshold movement of the first mobile device.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference location is a location where a signal that was used to determine the first distance indication originated.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the reference location is associated with a device used to initiate the request for the payment.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second mobile device has received a same identifying signal that was received by the first mobile device.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first identifying signal used the same identifying signal to determine the first distance indication and the second identifying signal used the same identifying signal to determine the second distance indication.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that first distance indication meets the threshold criteria includes determining that the first distance indication indicates a closer distance to the reference location than the second distance indication.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that first distance indication meets the threshold criteria includes determining that the first distance indication is in a preferred comparison order relative to the second distance indication.

14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that first distance indication meets the threshold criteria includes determining that the first distance indication belongs to a preferred group identified by a determined distance ranking.

15 . The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that first distance indication meets the threshold criteria includes determining that the first distance indication is different from the second distance indication by at least a threshold difference.

16 . The system of claim 1 , wherein determining that first distance indication meets the threshold criteria includes normalizing the first distance indication by a normalization factor based on a characteristic specific to the device model of the first mobile device.

17 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the request for payment has been provided to a plurality of mobile devices.

18 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication interface is further configured to, in the event another mobile device has approved payment of the request, send a communication to the first mobile device to cancel the request for payment.

19 . A method for providing a request, comprising:

receiving from a first mobile device a first distance indication indicating a physical distance between the first mobile device and a reference location;

using a processor to determine that the first distance indication meets a threshold criteria relative to a second distance indication of a second mobile device; and

providing a request for payment to the first mobile device based at least in on part on the determination that the first distance indication meets the threshold criteria.

20 . A computer program product for providing a request, the computer program product being embodied in a tangible computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

receiving from a first mobile device a first distance indication indicating a physical distance between the first mobile device and a reference location;

determining that the first distance indication meets a threshold criteria relative to a second distance indication of a second mobile device; and

providing a request for payment to the first mobile device based at least in on part on the determination that the first distance indication meets the threshold criteria.
