Abstract

In certain embodiments, a fence system includes a rail having a first surface having one or more apertures. The rail also includes second and third surfaces opposing one another, the first, second, and third surfaces of the rail forming a channel. The second surface and the third surface of the rail have first and second lips, respectively, the first and second lips extending into the channel. The fence system section also includes one or more pickets inserted through corresponding apertures of the first surface of the rail. Each picket has a first connection region located substantially in the channel formed by the first, second, and third surfaces of the rail such that the first connection region is substantially prevented from passing through the corresponding aperture in the first surface of the rail or between the opening defined by the first and second lips of the rail.

Claims (35)

1. A method, comprising:

setting a first fence post in a first foundation at a first location;

setting a second fence post in a second foundation at a second location; and

coupling a first rail of a fence section to at least one of the first post and the second post, the fence section comprising:

the first rail, the first rail comprising:

a first surface extending generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the first rail and having one or more apertures; and

a second surface and a third surface each generally to the longitudinal axis of the first rail and opposing one another such that the first, second, and third surfaces of the first rail form a channel, the second surface of the first rail having a first lip and the third surface of the first rail having a second lip, the first lip and the second lips extending into the channel formed by the first, second, and third surfaces of the first rail; and

one or more pickets each inserted through a corresponding one of the one or more apertures of the first surface of the first rail, each of the one or more pickets having a first connection region located substantially in the channel formed by the first, second, and third surfaces of the first rail, at least a portion of each of first and second opposing surfaces of each picket being deformed toward each other such that at least a portion of the first connection region is narrower, along a first axis extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the first rail, than an adjacent portion of the picket and is wider, along a second axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, than the adjacent portion of the picket, the at least a portion of the first connection region being adapted to substantially prevent the first connection region from passing through the corresponding aperture in the first surface of the first rail or between the opening defined by the first and second lips of the first rail.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the fence section further comprises a second rail, the second rail comprising:

a first surface extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the second rail and having one or more apertures; and

a second surface and a third surface each extending generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the second rail and opposing one another such that the first, second, and third surfaces of the second rail form a channel, the second surface of the second rail having a first lip and the third surface of the second rail having a second lip, the first lip and the second lip extending into the channel formed by the first, second, and third surfaces of the second rail;

the method further comprises coupling the second rail of the fence section to at least one of the first post and the second post; and

the one or more pickets each inserted through a corresponding one of the one or more apertures of the first surface of the first rail are inserted through a corresponding one of the one or more apertures of the first surface of the second rail, each of the one or more pickets having a second connection region located substantially in the channel formed by the first, second, and third surfaces of the second rail such that the second connection region is substantially prevented from passing through the corresponding aperture in the first surface of the second rail or between the opening defined by the first and second lips of the second rail.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting a first picket of the one or more pickets through a corresponding one of the one or more apertures of the first surface of the first rail, wherein inserting the first picket comprises:

inserting the first picket through a protective sleeve in the corresponding one of the one or more apertures, the protective sleeve designed to prevent scratching of paint on one or more surfaces of the first picket; and

removing the sleeve subsequent to inserting the first picket through the corresponding one of the one or more apertures.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first rail of the fence section is coupled to both the first post and the second post such that the fence section spans the space between the first post and the second post; and

the first rail is located in the same plane as the first post an the second post.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first rail of the fence section is coupled to both the first post and the second post such that the fence section spans the space between the first post and the second post; and

the first rail is located in a different plane from the first post an the second post.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising coupling a first attachment bracket to the first post and a second attachment bracket to the second post, wherein the first rail of the fence section is coupled to the first post and the second post via the first attachment bracket and the second attachment bracket.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first attachment bracket and the second attachment bracket each comprise a lip that corresponds to one of the first lip and the second lip of the first rail.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

coupling the first rail of the fence section to a first rail of an adjacent fence section to form a combined fence section;

coupling the first rail of the adjacent fence section to at least one of the first post and the second post such that the combined fence section spans the space between the first post and the second post.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first rail and the second rail are each located in a different plane from the first post and the second post.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising coupling a first attachment bracket to the first post and a second attachment bracket to the second post, wherein the first rail of the fence section is coupled to the first post via the first attachment bracket and the first rail of the adjacent fence section is coupled to the second post via the second attachment bracket.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first fence post is set in the first foundation such that it is substantially vertical;

the second fence post is set in the second foundation such that it is substantially vertical; and

the first rail of the fence section is coupled to at least one of the first post and the second post such that the first rail is substantially parallel to at least a portion of a section of ground located between the first location and the second location.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first rail of the fence section is coupled to at least one of the first post and the second post such that the one or more pickets are substantially parallel to at least one of the first post and the second post.
