Abstract

A self-contained pill dispenser is disclosed. A housing is provided and a hopper for containing a plurality of pills is supported by the housing. A transport tube is operatively connected to the hopper for receiving pills therefrom, the transport tube having an input aperture. A microcontroller is electrically connected to the hopper, the transport tube, and the input aperture. A mechanism accepts a desired number of pills to be delivered by the transport tube by an operator. The microcontroller is adapted to determine whether the actual average number of pills delivered by the transport tube is equal to the desired number of pills specified by the operator. If the actual average number of pills is greater than the desired number, the microcontroller decreases the opening of the input aperture. A mechanism connected to the inlet aperture controls opening and closing operations thereof, pursuant to instructions transmitted by the microcontroller.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus for counting and dispensing pills, comprising:

a) a housing;

b) a hopper for containing a plurality of pills, said hopper being supported by said housing;

c) a variable speed transport tube operatively connected to said hopper for receiving pills therefrom, said transport tube having a closable outlet and an adjustable input aperture with an opening associated therewith;

d) a microcontroller electrically connected to said hopper, said variable speed transport tube, and said adjustable input aperture;

e) means operatively connected to said adjustable inlet aperture for controlling opening and closing operations thereof, pursuant to instructions transmitted by said microcontroller.

2. The apparatus for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising:

f) means for accepting a desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube by an operator of said apparatus.

3. The apparatus for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 2 , wherein said microcontroller is adapted to determine whether the actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is equal to said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator.

4. The apparatus for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 3 , wherein said microcontroller decreases the opening of said adjustable input aperture when said actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is greater than said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator.

5. The apparatus for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 3 , wherein said microcontroller increases the opening of said input aperture when said actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is less than said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator.

6. The apparatus for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a feed chute operatively connected between said hopper and said variable speed transport tube.

7. A method for counting and dispensing pills, the steps comprising:

a) providing a housing, a hopper for containing a plurality of pills, said hopper being supported by said housing, a variable speed transport tube operatively connected to said hopper for receiving pills therefrom, said transport tube having an adjustable input aperture and a closable outlet;

b) accepting a desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube by an operator of said apparatus;

c) determining whether the actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is equal to said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator; and

d) decreasing the opening of said adjustable input aperture when said actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is greater than said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator.

8. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 7 , the steps further comprising:

e) providing a microcontroller electrically connected to said hopper and to said variable speed transport tube, said microcontroller performing said accepting step (b), said determining step (c), and said decreasing step (d).

9. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 7 , the steps further comprising:

e) providing a feed chute operatively connected between said hopper and said variable speed transport tube.

10. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 8 , the steps further comprising:

f) providing a feed chute operatively connected between said hopper and said variable speed transport tube.

11. A method for counting and dispensing pills, the steps comprising:

a) providing a housing, a hopper for containing a plurality of pills, said hopper being supported by said housing, a variable speed transport tube operatively connected to said hopper for receiving pills therefrom, said variable speed transport tube having an adjustable input aperture and a closable outlet;

b) accepting a desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube by an operator of said apparatus;

c) determining whether the actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is equal to said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator; and

d) increasing the opening of said adjustable input aperture when said actual average number of pills delivered by said variable speed transport tube is less than said desired number of pills to be delivered by said variable speed transport tube specified by said operator.

12. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 11 , the steps further comprising:

e) providing a microcontroller electrically connected to said hopper and to said variable speed transport tube, said microcontroller performing said accepting step (b), said determining step (c), and said increasing step (d).

13. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 11 , the steps further comprising:

e) providing a feed chute operatively connected between said hopper and said variable speed transport tube.

14. The method for counting and dispensing pills in accordance with claim 12 , the steps further comprising:

f) providing a feed chute operatively connected between said hopper and said variable speed transport tube.
