Chicken mid-wing splitter
An apparatus for splitting poultry mid-wings into separate radius and ulna portions. The apparatus includes a plurality of carrier blocks mounted to a drive chain that drives the carrier blocks along a path in a continuous loop around the apparatus. Each carrier block has recesses formed in it that cooperate with recesses formed in adjacent carrier blocks to form carrier slots that hold mid-wings in a predetermined orientation. A blade member having an upper blade and a lower blade extends into the path and is aligned with blade channels formed in the carrier blocks. The blade member bisects mid-wings that are held in the carrier slots as they move downstream. The carrier blocks rotate downwardly about the downstream end of the path and are separated from one another, thereby opening the carrier slots. The separated mid-wings contained in the slots are thereby allowed to fall out of the slots.
1. A blade member for use with a poultry cutting apparatus, the blade member comprising:
(a) a substantially planar upper blade having a sharpened top edge and a sharpened bottom edge, wherein said top and bottom edges intersect to define a piercing tip;
(b) a substantially planar lower blade that is substantially coplanar with the upper blade and has an at least partially sharpened top edge; and
(c) a crotch defined by an intersection of the bottom edge of the upper blade and the top edge of the lower blade.
2. The blade member in accordance with claim 1 , further comprising a mounting plate that is substantially coplanar with the upper blade.
3. The blade member in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the upper blade is substantially longer than the lower blade.
4. A combination blade holder and blade member, the combination comprising:
(a) a blade holder;
(b) at least a first blade member having:
(i) a substantially planar upper blade having a sharpened top edge and a sharpened bottom edge, wherein said top and bottom edges intersect to define a piercing tip;
(ii) a substantially planar lower blade that is substantially coplanar with the upper blade and has an at least partially sharpened top edge; and
(iii) a first crotch defined by an intersection of the bottom edge of the upper blade and the top edge of the lower blade; and
(iv) a mounting plate substantially coplanar with the upper blade, the mounting plate extending through the blade holder, whereby a second crotch is defined by an intersection of the sharpened top edge of the upper blade and an adjacent face of the blade holder.
5. The combination in accordance with claim 4 , further comprising a second blade member disposed adjacent and parallel to the first blade member, the second blade member having:
(a) a substantially planar upper blade having a sharpened top edge and a sharpened bottom edge, wherein said top and bottom edges intersect to define a piercing tip;
(b) a substantially planar lower blade that is substantially coplanar with the upper blade and has an at least partially sharpened top edge; and
(c) a first crotch defined by an intersection of the bottom edge of the upper blade and the top edge of the lower blade; and
(d) a mounting plate substantially coplanar with the upper blade, the mounting plate extending through the blade holder, whereby a second crotch is defined by an intersection of the sharpened top edge of the upper blade and an adjacent face of the blade holder.
6. A combination blade holder, blade members, and poultry cutting apparatus, the combination comprising:
(a) a blade holder mounted to the poultry cutting apparatus;
(b) at least first and second substantially parallel blade members mounted to the blade holder, each of the blade members having:
(i) a substantially planar upper blade having a sharpened top edge and a sharpened bottom edge, wherein said top and bottom edges intersect to define a piercing tip;
(ii) a substantially planar lower blade that is substantially coplanar with the upper blade and has an at least partially sharpened top edge;
(iii) a first crotch defined by an intersection of the bottom edge of the upper blade and the top edge of the lower blade; and
(iv) a mounting plate substantially coplanar with the upper blade, the mounting plate extending through the blade holder, whereby a second crotch is defined by an intersection of the sharpened top edge of the upper blade and an adjacent face of the blade holder;
wherein the first and second blade members extend into blade channels formed through each of a plurality of abutting carrier blocks arranged in a series.
